At Wit's End
By Erma Bombeck
Gail Sheehy, who wrote “Passages,” was one of the
first writers to put our lives into predictable cycles:
the traumatic 20s, the illusion-shattering 30s, and the
restless 40s.
Heaven knows I’m trying to keep on schedule, but it
isn’t easy. One of my contemporaries said to me the
other day, “Of course you know what cycle we’re in
now, don’t you?” When I looked puzzled she added,
“We’re in our giving-the-jewelry-and-goodies-away-
to-our-children-bef ore-we-go. ’ ’
Well, if I wait for one of my children to show an
interest in anything I’ve got, I’ll be too old tp make the
trip!
I can’t remember at what stage material things
handed down became important to me. I think it was
last year. All of a sudden, I wanted to surround myself
with Grandma’s favorite mixing bowl, my mother-in-
law’s rocker, lace-covered chairback doilies, and
piano shawls. (There’s a picture of my mother in
bloomers sucking on a nickel that I would kill for.)
The past is not that important to our children. I got
out a box of jewelry the other night and showed it to
my daughter. “Just think. Someday all of this will be
yours.” I hung a necklace around her neck like an
Olympic gold medal.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Just a little bauble I got in the Greek islands. Do
you like it?”
“It looks like the glass you use in canning jars.”
Don’t you and your brothers care about things that
have defied time and endured far beyond their ex-
pectancy?”
“We love you and Dad. We always have.”
“I was not referring to our longevity. I was talking
about material things. Like my fur jacket. I’m
leaving it to you, you, know.” C
“The one with the feet and the diseased toenails?”
“They’re not diseased. That coat is a classic.”
“I hate it. It always looks like it’s running away
from home.”
The “legacy cycle” must have been on my mind the
other night when I fell asleep, because I had a dream
about it. I was at a garage sale when I picked up a
piece of my Waterford crystal that the kids had
marked 25 cents. My autographed copy of Anne
Morrow Lindbergh for 10 cents, and a cup and saucer
that I lugged 4,000 miles in my handbag from Easter
Island with a magic marker figure of 15 cents on it.
I shook my husband out of a sound sleep. “That rips
it!” I said. “If they think they’re going to sell my
Heidi paperweight for 35 cents... I’m not going! ”

Top sweet cherries
with English cream
THE NEWS-TELEGRAM, Sulphur Spring*, Texas, Thursday, June 19,1980—3.

By Aileen Claire
NEA Food Editor
Fresh-fruit desserts are a
special treat during summer
months when many fruits are
at their peak.
Fresh sweet cherries from
the Pacific Northwest now
are in most markets. Their
season is quite short — only
until August.
They make a refreshing
dessert simply eaten outrof-
hand or served with ice
cream. More elegant are
cherries jubilee or individual
. cherry souffles,
Another way to prepare
these delightful cherries is
with an English cream that
Colonial cooks called “boiled
custard” and that French
cooks call "creme anglaise."
The cream Is basically a
classic egg-thickened custard
with whipped cream and sug-
ar folded in Serve the cher-
ries whole or pitted and
topped with the English
cream.
CHERRIES WITH ENGLISH
CREAM
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons flour
'A cup hot milk
’A teaspoon vanilla
extract
■A cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon powdered
sugar
1-2 tablespoons sherry
(optional)
4 cups Northwest fresh
sweet cherries -
Whole Northwest fresh
sweet cherries for
garnish, optional
Combine egg yolks, sugar
and flour in top of double
boiler. Place over simmering
water. Gradually add hot milk
and vanilla. Cook and stir
until thickened and smooth,
about 5 minutes
Cool thoroughly. Stir occa-
sionally.
Whip cream with powdered
sugar until stiff. Fold whipped
cream and sherry into cooled
sauce.
Wash and stem cherries.
Pit, if desired.
Divide cherries among 4
dessert dishes. Pour sauce
over cherries just before serv-
ing. Garnish with yhole cher-
ry if desired.
This kitchen-tested recipe
makes 4 servings. ,

Alcohol and liver woes
DEAR DR. LAMB - The
doctor says that my husband
has some liver damage. Is this
cirrhosis of the liver? He took
some blood tests that evident-
ly showed the damage. My
husband feels OK and if it
were not for the blood tests
you wouldn’t know there was
anything wrong.
The doctor left him on- a
regular diet but told him to be
sure to get plenty of protein
and to go light on the salt. He
suggested that he take vita-
mins every day. He also told
Bud not to drink any alcohol,.
not even one beer. Does that
mean the liver damage was
caused by alcohol?
I'm confused about that
because Bud has never been a
heavy drinker. He drinks an
occasional cocktail but mostly
a can of beer in the evening or
several on the week ends.
If you eat a good diet regu-
larly won't that keep you
from damaging the liver with
alcohol? Just what is the out-
look for him? Will he develop
symptoms from his liver dam-
age and if so, what?
DEAR READER - Evi-
dently your husband is one ofr!
those people who have blood '
tests indicative of abnormal
liver function even though he
has no symptoms. Liver dis-
ease can be insidious and may
cause only mild fatigue. Of
course, there are many other
things that cause fatigue as
well.
Those blood tests are very
sensitive and often don’t mean
there is extensive damage. If
your doctor had suspected
more serious, disease, he
would probably have asked
for other tests including a
biopsy of the liver to look at it
under the microscope. He
probably will repeat the tests
and if they stay mildly abnor-
mal or return to normal, he
may decide to do nothing else
about it

If your husband does devel-
op more serious liver disease,
he may have digestive
complaints, particularly
indigestion. Or he could even
develop some mild jaundice.
There are a number of physi-
cal signs that people with liv-
er disease may develop.
I am sending you The
Health Letter number 7-8,
Living with Your Liver, to
give you more information on
what the liver does and what
changes occur when it is not
functioning properly. Other
readers who want this issue
can send 75 cents with a long,
stamped, self-addressed enve-
lope for it. Send your request
to me, in care of this newspa-
per, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City
Station, New York, NY 10019.
I doubt your husband has
cirrhosis of the liver. That
usually occurs after a rela-
tively long period of disease.
It is simply replacement of
liver tissue with scar tissue.
Cirrhosis can be caused by
many different liver diseases,
including inflammation of the
small bile ducts inside the
liver, as a complication of
long-standing heart failure or
as a complication of viral hep-
atitis and various toxins,
including alcohol.
The fact that your doctor
asked your husband not to use
alcohol does not mean that he
thinks alcohol caused his
problem. Alcohol is a direct
toxin to the liver cells. If the
liver is damaged (or any
reason, alcohol should not be
used. The liver normally
metabolizes alcohol. Eating a
good diet is helpful when the
Over is being insulted with
alcohol toxin but nutrition
cannot prevent all the toxic
effects of alcohol.
Incidentally, cirrhosis of
the liver is the fourth most
common cause of death in
American men between the
ages of 35 and 54. Sixty per-
cent of these are caused from
the excess use of alcohol.
