Church fights
court orders
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The
California attorney general’s
office is seeking a new court
order in an attempt to get
Worldwide Church of God
treasurer Stanley Rader to
answer 150 questions for
depositions in the state’s civil
suit against the 100,000-member
church.
The hearing before Superior
Court Judge Robert Weil on the
attorney general’s latest motion
is scheduled for Aug. 6, said
Deputy Attorney General Jim
Cordi.
Cordi wants Rader to be
required to answer the
questions or default on the suit
demanding financial disclosure
from the church. He said Rader
has appeared three times at
deposition sessions but had
refused to answer “a vast
majority” of the questions put
to him.
The church in each case has
appealed court rulings ordering
Rader and 87-year-old church
founder Herbert Armstrong to
appear for questioning.
