Fairmont Squire
Fairmont taking place
as popular Ford product
By DOYLE K. GETTER
Auto Calunui: Since a tuneup,
my 1970 Chevelle has been
spewing black smoke from the
exhaust. My mechanic tells me
it is a buildup of carbon but why
now, after a tuneup, when it
never happened before? —
GEORGE HEFT, Chicopee,
Mass.
Mr. Heft: Carbon usually
burns with a white smoke.
Black smoke indicates an
overrrich air-fuel mixture. I
think you have a carburetor
problem — a power valve
leaking or a float level set too
high. It also could be caused by
a wrong point dwell; that can
cause a super-rich mixture.

Well designed and well ac-
cepted, the intermediate size
Fairmont may turn out to be
the most popular car built by
Ford since the Model T.
Introduced as an all-new 1978
model to replace the Maverick,
the Farimont has led Ford in
sales ever since. The reasons
are not hard to find.
It is an economical and
roomy family car offering a
choice of four cylinder, six
cylinder and V-8 engines in
standard and luxury versions of
two and four door sedan and
station wagon models. There’s
a Fairmont for almost any
need.
I tested a luxury version of
the Fairmont Squire wagon
with the optional 3.3 liter (200
cubic inch) six cylinder engine
and automatic transmission.
Ford has emphasized interior
roominess in the Fairmonts.
They all have 41.7 inches of
front legroom and a generous
minimum of 35.3 inches in the
second seat.
The wagon is a well
proportioned small car for a
vacationing family. With the
rear seat in use — the wagon
will seat five — there is room
for more than 20 cubic feet of
luggage behind the seat. With
the seat folded down, there is
nearly 80 cubic feet of space.
The sedans have 16.8 cubic feet
of luggage space.
The wagon, as well as the
sedans, is 195.5 inches in length
on a 105.5 inch wheelbase. They
all are 71 inches wide and the
wagon’s height is 54.4 inches,
almost an inch more than the
sedans.
In recent years, the ride of
virtually all station wagons has
been improved to where they
are as comfortable as sedans.
With a strut-type front
suspension and a coil-spring
and four-bar-link rear
suspension, the Fairmont
wagon’s ride, smooth on good
roads, is well controlled on
rough surfaces. Steering is
precise with rack-and-pinion
gearing. I averaged
20.9 miles per gallon in a week
of city and urban freeway
driving at prevailing speeds. I
averaged 24.6 miles per gallon
on a 105 mile highway test at 55
miles an hour. The wagon has a
16 gallon fuel tank.
The 3.3 liter optional engine
would accelerate the 2778
pound wagon from zero to 50
miles an hour in 12 seconds and
from 30 to 50 in 7.1 seconds.
The standard 140 cubic inch
four-cylinder engine can also
be ordered in an optional
turbocharged version. The
optional two-barrel V-8 has a
displacement of 255 cubic in-
ches.
The base price of the Fair-
mont Squire wagon is $4,875.
The test car was loaded with
luxury, power and convenience
options that boosted the price
as tested to $8,654.
Some of the extras included
the optional engine and
automatic transmission,
power-assisted windows, locks,
steering and brakes, a rear
hatch window electric washer
and wiper, rear window
defroster, AM-FM stereo radio,
luggage rack and wire wheel
covers.
Auto Column: I have 97,000
miles on my 1971 Caprice and
only one problem, which just
started recently. When I come
to a stop light and apply the
brakes, my brake pedal goes on
hard: If I stay at the light for a
minute or two, the pedal goes
down a little, I hear a slight
click and the brake light on the
dash goes on. If I take my foot
off the pedal and then press
down again, the light goes off.
— P. KUDEBA, Tonawanda,
N.Y.
Mr. Kudeba: Either you have
an internal leak in the brake
master cylinder or the brake
equalizer valve is not fun-
ctioning properly.
Auto Column: My 1979 Chevy
has 8,500 miles on it My
problem is that between 35 and
55 miles an hour there is a
whine in the rear end. ’The

Chevy dealer says he can cure
it by putting something on the
front of the drive shaft. What is
the problem and is that the
cure? — MR. C. W., Galesburg,
m.
Mr. C. W.: The whine is ring
gear and pinion noise and your
mechanic wants to put a
damper on the drive shaft to
dampen the noise. That’s the
usual “fix” but if the ring gear
is excessively noisy, it won’t
clear up all of the noise and you
may have to replace a gear.
Auto Column: My '78
Thunderbird has the 302 engine,
no air conditioning and has
18,000 kilometers on the
odometer. It has an occasional
habit of filtering momentarily,
like an occasional spark plug
misfiring. It can happen at any
speed. I have installed new
plugs and checked the plug
wires on an ohmeter; they are
okay. The gas filter also is
clean. This has been happening
for at least 8,500 kilometers. —
MR. M. T. R., Windsor, On-
tario.
Mr. M. T. R.: It’s probably an
electrical problem but I doubt it
would show up on an electronic
tester unless the problem was
happening just at that time. If it
is not too annoying, it might be
easier to locate it later if the
problem deteriorates.
