At ms End /f|| Keep sexual preference
‘ as your private business
By Erma Bom beck
out & about
I come from a family rf pioneers.
Mr mother invented gmit in 1936.
My dad dedicated his life to trying to get nail holes
mfleiaBtahtaittirnsrim
And according to my children, I introduced the
ward “No” to the Western world. (Before that time
parents ased “Well see.”) Their theory is that at first
Ionkosed the word to get attention. Then I started to
enjoy it and today it s such a habit I say “No” before
they even ask the question.
ft’s a distinction I don't deserve. I am not the first
mother in North America to use the word “No.” In
fact, there is no doubt in my mind that when
fogtoriam decipher cave markings of prehistoric
cave dwellers and discover etched in a rock a
pSamthe, "Stan! Can I eat the leftover bear?” her
re^wnse chiseled below will translate into, “No! I’m
saving ttffo-lunch!”
The word “No” is finally gaining the respectability
among child psychologists it has so long deserved.
Some of them are at last spreading the word that
“No” means love and character building.
When I told my kkfe this, they said they already had
more character than Mt. Rushmore.
They never understood me. They always thought I
got some kind of a cheap thrill out of saying, “No, you
cant drift down the Ohio River in a plastic dishpan,”
and watching them fall around over furniture staring
a! me with the contempt usually reserved for a
mother who picks her children up by the ears.
I doe t expect anyone to ever hilly appreciate that a
mother makes more decisions in (Hie morning than
the Supreme Court makes in three years.
“Can I borrow your camera to take to a beach
party’”
“‘You wanta chaperone our three-day-two-night
prom?”
“Can I pierce the (tog’s ears?”
•Will you tell me where you hid the book that
condenses every novel ever written so I won’t have to
read this whole book tonight for my report?”
"Can I wear what I’ve got on?”
•Can’t I stay here for a week by myself? ”
“Do you want me to grow up hating you?”
I went shopping with my daughter the other day and
as I pulled on a bathing suit I turned around and said,
“What do you think? Should I buy it?” She shook her
head and said, “No,”
“Why not?” I demanded.
“Because your entire body looks like it needs
pressing in it Fm saying no because I love you and it
will build your character. ”
Somehow, it sounded better when I said it.

Can coat be washed?
By Polly Cramer
POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY - I would like to remove some grease
spots from an all-weather coat that is made of material
like that used on raincoats. I cannot wash the coat
because it has a fur collar. — MARY
DEAR MARY — You sbonld take your coat to a good
dry cleaner. If the coat can be washed, rub detergent in
the stains before washing it in sodsy water and rinsing.
Plenty of detergent should be used when this treatment
is possible. — HILLY
DEAR POLLY — I use aluminum pie plates to cover stove
burners that are not being used when I am frying food. TTiU
keeps the burners from being splattered with grease, and cuts
down on stove cleaning. I appreciate this especially When
grease gets burned on.
I would also like to pass on my easy way of singeing the
hairs off a fowl. I put a tablespoon or less of rubbing alcdhol
into a saucer or small shallow bowl and light it. This makes a
clean, white, long-lasting flame that does not burn or blacken
the bird When the flame burns out, all that is left is a little
clear liquid. One tablespoon does a whole turkey. — LEILA
DEAR POLLY — To "screen” paint, stretch an old nylon
stocking over a can, hold it in place with a rubber band and
then pour the paint through. For a paint can handle, use a
small C-clamp on the top edge of the can.
While the dishwasher does the dishes, hold a rag in each
hand and clean up the cabinets and stove top.
To guide your car straight into the garage easily, hang a
string with a small RUBBER ball on the end from the center
of the ceiling, and aim for that.
(Pully’s Note — We had this in the column many years ago,
aal some owe wrote ia that be read it too quickly and used a
croquet ball with disastrous results. So, be sure your ball is
rubber!)
Using a rubber kitchen spatula simplifies spreading glue
over a large surface, since it is flexible enough to spread a
thin coat and stiff enough for good control. — NELLIS T.

coupon clippers if she uses your favorite Pointer, Peeve or
Problem in her column. Write POLLY’S POINTERS in care of

DEAR DR LAMB -
Recently I read in a magazine
that a virus had been found to
cause diabetes Does that
mean that they’ll soon have a
vaccine to prevent diabetes?
Would you comment about
this’
DEAR READER - Yes,
there was a case reported of
Coxsackie virus causing
destruction of the islets of
Langerhans in the pancreas
and resulting in diabetes. This
has also been demonstrated in
animals.
That's very important
research but you have to keep
in mind that it may not be a
frequent cause for diabetes.
The truth is that diabetes can
be caused by anything which
damages the islets of Lan-
gerhans in the pancreas They
are the tiny organs that pro-

Mumps also has been iden-

diabetes in some people

other complex metabolic

Scripture Reading forToday: Mark 8:15-21
GOD’S CONTINUING ENLIGHTENMENT
What I do thou knowest not now, but thou dull
know hereafter. John 13.7
T"HE disciples of Jesus didn't always understand His
| teachings. Their insight was incomplete. They remind
me of the blind man of Bethsaida who saw ' men like
trees, walking" (Mark 8:24). After Christ's resurrection and
the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, however, their
understanding would be broadened. Many things would
then be cleared up for them about )esus' redemptive plan
and coming kingdom. Meanwhile they were to proceed in
faith, resting on the precious promise that "hereafter" they
would comprehend His wise purposes.
Still today, the Lord's actions are frequently misunder-
stood by believers, as is shown in the following story:
Some years ago, a Christian merchant sustained severe
losses that made him doubt the wisdom of Divine provi-
dence which would permit him to have such trials. Com-
ing home in a gloomy state of mind, he sat down before
the fireplace His little son, a thoughtful child of 8, climbed
on his knee. Over the mantelpiece was a motto with these
words frem Psalm 18:30, As for Cod, His way is perfect.
After the boy read it, he said, "Dad, what does 'perfect'
mean?" Before his father could reply, he went on, "Doesn't
it mean that God never makes a mistake?" The arrow of
truth struck home. This comforting thought was exactly
what the troubled father needed. The cloud of misgivings
lifted as he realized that our unfailing Guide never does
anything wrong but works all things together for our good.
Troubled soul, don't be depressed He whose way is
perfect is in control. All will eventually be made plain.
Wait for God's continuing enlightenment. —H.G.B.
As for God, His way is perfect,
Though we may not understand;
But someday we'll clearly see it,
For His love the path has planned. —Anon.
