WASHINGTON AP» - At
J;l# am EDT today, Z2
reporters and 11 members of
the pteibc donned earphones
and heard Richard M. Nixon
say Hi. Rul, how are you’
SotTy to keep you waiting ”
They were listening to the
first of 31 Watergate tape
recordings made available to,
the public for the first time at
the National Archives, the
nation's storehouse of records
Only a hantfiul of members of
the public waited in the early
morning hours for a certain
chance to be among the first to
hear the tapes — previously
listened to only by government
officials, prosecutors and jurors
and others who attended the two
trials of Nixon's associates in
the long, evolving scandal
known as Watergate
Only 124 hours of the 6.000
hows of conversations secretly
recorded by Nixon were made
available because Nixon is
fighting in court to keep the
archives from allowing the
public to listen m on the rest of
the tapes He argues that his
own privacy And the right of
privacy of the presidency are at
stake
The first tape head today
was one used m the tnal of John
B Comally. Nixon's treasury
secretary , who was acquitted
on charges of accepting illegal
payments from a milk
producers cooperative.
Ultimately, the government
hopes to make available here
and in archives facilities in
Atlanta, Boston. Chicago.
Denser. Fort Worth. Texas.
Kansas City. Mo , Los Angeles.
Bayonne. N.J. Philadelphia.
San Bruno. Calif and Seattle
most of the tapes in its
possession They cover SJ8k
hours of talk
Nixon is fighting that plan m
court, contending it would be an
invasion of his privacy
There is no indication how
long the court battle might drag
on Until it is resolved, only the
31 tapes introduced as evidence
at the various trials will be
