Disturbing rapid
heart action
THE NEWS-TELEGRAjfjA. Sulphur Springs, Texas, Friday, Juna20,1990—3.
L
Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR LAMB -r I’m a
61-year-old woman, 75 pounds
overweight and doctoring for
high blood pressure. What I
really want to ask you about,
though, is the sudden pounding
of my heart I’ve had for more
40 years. It’s so bad I have to
lie down or I think I would
pass out. In the past as soon as
I was flat on my back, the
pounding would stop and the
heart would go back to beat-
ing normally. I could get up
and I’m OK, but last week this
happened and my heart did
not stop pounding for six or
seven hours. I had to stay in
bed This happens once or
twiceayear\
I know I'm dangerously
overweight but this pounding
of the heart began when I was
18 years old and I only
weighed 155 then. I'm 5-feet-7
and big-boned. I live on a
farm alone and I keep a cow
and take care of a house,
garden, mow my big lawn ^nd
cut wood so I get plenty of
exercise. I would like to know
more about this pounding
condition. I never have any .
pain when the heart pounds.
DEAR READER - You’ve
given a fairly classical
description of what doctors
call paroxysmal tachycardia.
These are attacks when the
heartbeats rapidly; some peo-
ple call them rapid heart
action. Usually the attack
begins suddenly and in many
people it stops just as quickly.
These are often caused by one
irritable spot in the heart. It’s
literally considered an extra
spark plug (pacemaker) to run
the heart and it has its own
inherent rate. That rate, of
course, is fast.
Often these attacks occur in
people who do not have any
underlying heart disease.
When you were 18 you proba-
bly didn’t have any heart dis-
ease and probably didn’t have
high blood pressure either and
still you had these attacks.
Now you're older and you
have high blood pressure and
you probably have some
changes in your heart and
arteries.But that doesn’t mean
that either your high blood
pressure or any other changes
you might have in the arteries
are the cause of your disorder.
I’m sending you The Health
Letter number 6-12, Heart
Irregularities, Skipped Beats
and Tachycardias. It will give
you far more detailed infor-
mation about this problem.
Other readers who want this
issue can send 75 cents with a
long, stamped, self-addressed
envelope for it. Send your
request to me, in care of this
newspaper, P.O. Box 1551,
Radio City Station, New York,
NY 10019.
Now the fact that such
attacks of rapid heart action
can occur in people who don’t
have underlying heart disease
doesn’t mean that they can’t
be disabling. They affect the
mechanical action of the
heart to the point that it
doesn’t pump efficiently and,
of course,, some of they do
produce symptoms which are
disabling as you've experi-
enced.
You’ve probably learned
that lying down kept you from
feeling faint. The only reason
you feel faint during the
attacks is because the
mechanical efficiency of the
heart has been compromised
to the point that you’re not
getting enough circulation to
the brain.
If you lose weight, it will
help your high blood pressure
but it probably won’t affect
your tachycardia. Neverthe-
less, I am sending you The
Health Letter number 4-7,
Weight Losing Diet, to give
you some guidelines to help
you in that department.

DEAR DR BLAKER - My
husband and I seem to have
little in common after seven
years of marriage but our
love for our 21-month-old
child. Our relationship is real-
ly suffering
We tried counseling at a
local mental-health center,
but my husband went only
once and I quit after three
sessions. I stopped because it
was expensive and disturbing
to tell a stranger such person-
al details.
Both of us agree on one
thing: We want to save our
marriage. We have been able
to identify our strengths and
weaknesses, but we haven’t
been able to solve our prob-
lem. ’
Is it possible for two people
with jittle in common any-
more to sustain a loving rela-
tionship?
DEAR READER - Has
what you had in common real-
ly disappeared? 6r has the
baby changed your lives so
that you can no longer enjoy
those interests?
After the birth of the first
baby, the mother often
becomes almost exclusively
involved in his or her care.
The husband feels rejected
and withdraws.
There is less and less
communication, less and less
effort expended on the “care
and feeding” of the marriage.
Instead of analyzing your
strengths and weaknesses,
begin putting more energy
into doing things together.
Make your relationship top
priority and find each other as
people again. „
Your marriage — and your
child - will suffer if you
don’t.
DEAR DR. BLAKER - I
am the father of two children,
ages 8 and 10. I was divorced
three years ago and have
decided to remarry.
The new woman in my life
has a large and wonderfully
warm family. They really
want to get to know my chil-
dren.
My ex-wife, who has custo-
dy of the children, thinks that
would be fine. But I wonder if
the children might find it too
confusing to have such a large
“family.”
DEAR READER - Frank
Furstenburg, psychology pro-
fessor at the University of
Pennsylvania, recently told
the Assembly of Behavioral
and Social Scientists that
remarriage can result in
“increasing kinship ties and
creating a network that
offsets to some degree the
decline in family size as the
child acquires additional dot-
ing grandparents, uncles,
aunts and cousins.”
The importance of such kin-
ship systems is clear from
current estimates that one-
quarter of today’s children
will have a stepparent before
they reach age 18.
Evidently, any confusion is
more than made up for by the
children’s becoming connect-
ed, albeit sometimes only
weaklwMo many adults who
are prepared to regard them
as special.
So, rest assured that the
results will rbe positive for
your children.
Moreover, this involvement
should also help yoUr new
wife feel more secure. The
emotional life of a stepparent
is somewhat precarious at
best.

Your Child Accept Divorce."

per, P.O. Box 475, Radio City

eral interest will be discussed

James Lile, business manager
for the University Playhouse,
said.
Sixteen members of, the
University Playhouse resident
company were selected on the
basis of their overall
proficiency in the field of
theater arts, Lile said. Half of
the company will be making
their acting debuts on the
Playhouse stage.
Classifications of students
range from first semester
freshmen to graduates.
The competition with
baseball, softball, soccer and
the Democratic Convention has
been tough for the Community
Players. Members of the group
were heard praying for more
rain early Friday morning. —
The feeling was that if the rain
continues the ball fields will be
closed and “Bus Stop" would be
the alternative to television
reruns. Admission will be sold
at the door starting at 7 p.m.
Friday and Saturday nights in
the Civic Center. A matinee is
scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.

Scripture Reading for Today: Ephesians 6:10-20
A BULLETPROOF VEST
Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to
stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6 :11
"■“HE use of bulletproof vests by law officers has proven
1 very effective in saving their lives. Los Angeles motor-
cycle policeman Edwin Goulart bought one in 1973
and began wearing it every'day. In September 1974, be
was shot in the chest with a 32-caliber revolver while
, ticketing a motorist, but he suffered only a minor bruise,
While these vests do not cover the whole body, they
greatly reduce the risk of being killed by gunshot.
In the spiritual realm, God has provided Christians with
an armor that protects thif' entire person from the attacks
of Satan and his forces. Its defensive pieces include the
helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, and
tlie shield of faith. And for striking back, we are equipped
with the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
The Lord has also given us His truth as a belt and the gos-
pel of peace as shoes for our feet.
As with a bulletproof jacket, the believer's armor pro-
vides Security only if it is put on, Some officers have been
killed on duty, simply because they didn't bofherTo'WPjr
their vests. So too, many of God’s children become spir-
itual casualties because they don’t equip themselves with
the means provided for their safety.
+~ If I were a policeman, I'd want to be well protected
every day, wouldn't you? Shouldn't we who believe on the
Lord Jesus be just as diligent in putting on the whole
armor of God? We do this by reading the Word and pray-
ing, by obeying the Lord's commands and witnessing. Then
we will be totally shielded from anything Satan might hurl
at ui. —H.V.L.
Soldiers of Christ, arise J
And put your armor on,
Strong In the strength which God supplies
Through His eternal Son.
-Wesley

to wear it.

Relationship with
married man
is unhealthy
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 years old and I am having an affair
with a married man who Is In his 44s.
I love him so much that It hurts when we’re not together.
I know that he cares for me because he told me so. My
problem Is that I want to tell him bow much I love him
without being too pushy. I don’t want to scare him away.
Can you help me? - Sylvia, Hagerstown, Md.
Sylvia: I’m sure the only reason this married man wants
to see you Is for sexual favors. This relationship Is very
unhealthy and must be ended by you immediately or else
you could be headed for a tragedy that your mom and dad
won’t be able to help you with.
Dr. Wallace: I’m a 13-year-old boy who shares a room
with a f-year-old brother. I’m neat and organized but my
brother likes to slop his clothes and toys on the floor and
then I wind up picking them up.
You can’t believe how many toys are crammed under the
tables and his bed.
I’ve talked to my parents about getting my own bedroom
(we have five In our house) but they say no. What should I
do to make my brother shape up? — David, Dubuque, Iowa
David: Don’t pick up after your brother. Walt until the
room becomes unbearable, then Invite your parents In for a
little “room warming.”
When they see your brother’s slop, they should have
mercy on you and give you a room to yourself. If not, surely
they will make him tidy his mess.
If that falls, some of his better toys might wind up
missing, until the room can once again be livable.
Dr. Wallace: I am a 14-year old girt who didn't want to
lose the boyfriend that I love so dearly, but I lost him. He Is
now dating so many different girls that I can't count them
all.
1 still feel that I belong to Fernando and don't think that I
should date other guys. I know he will come back to me.
What do you think? — Kylle, Hayward, Calif.
Kylle: I think that when Fernando decides to return to
you, that he should have to wait until you return home from
your date with a handsome boy.
