Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.
In 1541, the King of Spain sent
him to what now is Texas. His
orders were to find Cibola, the
legendary seven “cities of gold,”
and colonize them.
To help with the job, Coronado
brought along an entourage of
1,500 men and women and 1,000
horses. To feed the party, he also
trailed 5,000 sheep and 500 cattle.
Coronado marched from the
Staked Plains to the Red River
and never found the golden
cities.
