Super speedy
cleanup set
for August 21
Visitors and residents are invited
to take an hour out of a morning
and clean the beach for the last Su-
per Speedy Summer Sweep. The
one-hour event conducted by Keep
Port Aransas Beautiful (KPAB) will
be held from 8 to 9 a.m. on Satur-
day, Aug. 21.
KPAB has held the monthly sum-
mer clean-ups for the last two years
in an effort to make beach visitors
aware of the need to leave the beach
as clean as, or cleaner than, they
found it. The event is also done to
clean up the small trash, such as ciga-
rette butts, glass pieces, nails and
drink tabs not easily picked up by
city scraping.
Circle K stores have donated
drink coupons for volunteers.
Contact Don Anz at 749-6060 or
AnzPorta@yahoo.com or visit the
KPAB Web site, www.kpab.org for
more information.

Maybe we’re just lucky.
Last year by this time, two cases
of vibrio vulnificus infection had
been reported in the Coastal
Bend.
This year, according to the City-
County Health Department in
Corpus Christi, there have been
none.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Con-
trol calls vibrio infection a relatively
rare cause of disease, but also warns
that it’s under-reported.
Infections come when people
whose immune systems are weak-

Free fitness classes for school em-
ployees and any property owner in
Port Aransas are available Monday
through Thursday each week at H.G.
Olsen Elementary School, 100 S.
Station St. Those not qualifying may
still attend for a small fee.
Step-aerobics and weight training
have been the regimen for three years,
with Sharon Dignum instructing.
Classes are at 4 p.m. on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays, with
classes at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays (two classes are held on
Thursdays).

tion.
ened eat raw oysters. But it can also
strike when someone with an open
wound is exposed to warm sea wa-
ter, especially in back bays.
Around Woody’s Sports Center’s
docks, fishing guides shake their
heads when asked if they’ve heard
of any cases this year.
Steve Zarych, captain of the Molly
Anna, said he hasn’t heard of any
either.
But along the mid-Texas coast, at
least four suspected cases of vibrio
infections have been reported this
year.
Two Houston men became ill in
mid-July after wade fishing in a Port
O’Connor bay. One of them is re-
covering slowly; the other has had
both legs amputated as doctors at-
tempt to fight the disease.
A Bay City fishing guide, Jesse
Arsola, 44, is recovering in a Bay
City hospital, the Victoria Advo-
cate reported. Arsola had been
fishing in Baffin and Matagorda
bays before becoming ill, the pa-
per said.
A fourth man is in stable condi-
tion in a Victoria hospital after be-
ing treated for the disease.
Doctors warn that any open sore
that’s exposed to warm sea water
can be a source for the infection.
It usually starts with blistering of
ulcers around the sore and can
progress to bloodstream infections
if it’s not treated, they say.
Bloodstream infections caused by
vibrio vulnificus are fatal about half
the time, the Centers for Disease
Control reports.
The bacterium is part of the same
family that causes cholera. It lives
in warm seawater, and so incidents
of the disease are more often re-
ported during the summer.
The bacterium is always present
in salt water, but most often causes
infections when the water is warm,
they said.
Health professionals warn people
with poor immune systems - espe-
cially those with liver diseases - to
stay away from raw oysters. Such
people are more than 80 times more
likely to contract vibrio vulnificus,
they say.
Cooking destroys the bacterium,
however.
And they advise people who have
open wounds that have been exposed
to warm salt water to wash the
wounds thoroughly with fresh water.
Carry fresh water with you if you
might be exposed to salt water, they say.

Sunset Sounds will feature musi-
cian Bill Averbach and the Pneu-
matic Swing from 7 to 9 p.m. on
Friday, Aug. 13.
Each month in Roberts Point
Park at the Patsy Jones Memorial
Amphitheater, this free cultural pro-

The Pneumatic Swing quartet is
comprised of Averbach on trumpet
and vocals, “Smokin” Eddie Skipwith
on guitar, Carl Melton on bass, and
Preecher Williams on drums. The

nals by Averbach.
Averbach has been a profes-

Averbach is an advocate of cul-
