To Become Bigger
Belter Attraction
SAN ANTONIO Acknow-
ledged ns the "Queen of the New
Spain Missions" San Jose Mis-
sion in southeastern San An-
tonio recently drew the atten-
tion of Texas Parks and Wild-
life Commissioners.
Commissioners approved a
"concept plan" as presented to
department park planners and
historians which calls for the
full development of an inter
pretation program and coopera-
tion with the Catholic Church
Nntional Park Service and His
torical commission on tnc pre
servation and restoration of the
18th century mission.
Snn Joso y San Miguel de Ag-
uayo mission was tounueu in
1720 by the Franciscans. It ex
crtcd a profound cultural influ-
ence on the Indians living in the
northern portions of the Now
Spain Empire.
The mission at its heigth in
1778 was described by the Fran
ciscan fathers as being "incom-
parable in beauty plan and
strength."
At the peak of its influence
the- mission's compound walls
sheltered 350 people.
In separate places Coahuil-
tecan Indians were taught car-
pentry weaving leather work
and academic skills.
San Jose wos used into the
lflth century but was abandon-
ed by 1853.
Indian and soldier's guartcrs
decayed and collapsed and
around 188G the dome and roof
of the church caved in.
The church's tower collapsed
in 1923 but was immediately rebuilt.

Kansas.

Texas Parks and Wildlife De-
partment at no cost; all the
department had to do was
move them.
A total of 4V1 million fish
wejnt to tho Lc'wisville San
Marcos Medina Dundee and
Possum Kingdom Hatcheries
to be reared to fingerling size
and later stocked in public re-
servoirs. The balance of walleye
were stocked directly into
Lakes Palestine Conroe and
Possum Kingdom.
