Accurate Records
Help Taxpayers
File Returns
Taxpayers who keep good re-
cords during the entire year will
bo better prepared to file a com-
plete and accurate tax return
the Internal Revenue Service
said.
By keeping good financial re-
cords the taxpayer can not only
substantiate expenses income
and. itemized deductions listed
on his or her tax return but also
be aware of certain deductions
that might otherwise be over-
looked. Taxpayers are not required to
keep any particular typo of re-
cords but they must retain all
receipts cancelled checks bills
and other written documents to
provide their expense.
These records must bo kept
for at least three years from tho
date that the return wa3 due or
filed of two years from the date
that the tax was paid whichever
occurs later.
Some records should be kept
even longer the IRS advised
such as property records which
should be retained as long as
thev arc useful in dertermining
tho basis of tho original or re
placement property. In addition
copies of past tax returns can
help the taxpayer prepare future
returns.
.For additional information
on recordkeeping' taxpayers can
order the free IRS Publication
G52 "Recordkeeping Require-
ments and a Guide to Tax Publi-
cations" by sending in tho order
blank found in tho tax package.
