Flood
Control
Pushed
Plans for the far-reaching
flood control and conserva-
tion program for the Upper
Lake Fork Creek watershed
Southwest of Sulphur.
Springs are moving steadily i
down the long route to final ac-
tion in Washington.
Construction of 23 small reser-
voirs in the three-toupty area is
recommended in the program
drawn up hy a Soil Conservation
Service survey party after an ex-
tended study of the section.
The reservoirs would be built
on the headwaters and tributaries
of Lake Fork, Garrett, Turkey
and Elm creeks. Thirteen would
be in Hopkins County, eight in
Hunt County and two in Rains;
County.
Effectiveness to Vary
Flood protection resulting from
the program is designed to be
' about 90 per cent effective in the
upstream part of the district in
Hopkins County. Effectiveness
naturally diminishes with the ac-
cumulation of water downstream,
reaching 50 to 60 per cent at the
Highway 19 crossing of Lakf
Fork Creek.
The tentative plans have been
given preliminary approval by
supervisors of the Houjcins-Rains
Conservation District'* and of
