But business is much too good
for Sugar Ray Robinson and Ba-
sllio to be put back in their open
classes, where attractive matches
await each, although none ap-
proaching their renewal money
wise.
Against Robinson in the Chi-
cago battlepit, Basilio looked ev-
en’ more like a boy tackling a
■man' than' he'di(TfKe'first Yiip at
Yankee Stadium.
Boxing history is replete with
cases of accomplished ringmen
getting their ears .pinned back in
biting off more than they could
chew. And Basilio is little more
than a glorified club fighter with
tremendous heart. When Robiq*
son was still pretty good, he dis-
covered why they put fighters on
scales. The Sugar Man suffered
frofti something more" than the
heat that night against Joey
Maxim.
Basilio conceded Robinson 10
or 11 pounds in addition to height
and reach. Robinson, who had to
make weight, came in at 159 3/4
pounds 10 hours before they were
called front and center. A built-
up Baailio weighed „163. Robin-
son picked UP something like three
pounds by r i n g t i m e. Basilio,
whose best weight is 151, prob-
ably lost a pound.
If a racing secretary were
handicapping the Robinson of
today and Basilio with the idea
of bringing them to the wire vft
a photo finish the hand icaps
would be just what they were.
Basilio would get seven years in
age, Robinson 10 pounds, four
and a half inches in height and
filre and a half inches in reach.
.That brings them so closely
together that they batter each
other into a state of exhaustion
and fight to a split^d e c i a i o n.
There hasn't been a knockdown in
30 rounds.
While there was plenty of
doubt on both sides, the bettors
made the open target that is Ba-
silio an 8-to-5 favorite.
There are a half dozen middle-
weights who would be equally
well liked against Robinson’, who
is on his last legs at crowding 38.
In the opinion of schooled box-
ing men, Robinson would be mad*
to order for a strong young belt-
er like Rory Calhoun, Joey Gi*r-
dello, Holly Mims, Spider Webb,
Charley Humez and Bobby Boyd
would be liked against him. The

! The A’s seem to be a cut above
stronger
speed and defense but they lack
any real power. Because of the
makeup of his squad, Craft sees
a great many low-scoring games
and he realizes that if the A’s are
to progress this year they have
to win their share of the scraps
determined by one run. He thinks
his boys have the spirit to sh-ow
well in the close ones.
The Athletics have done a con-
siderable amount of trading
since their transfer to Kansas
CRy and as a result only 5
players iff holdovers from the
team that moved from Philadel-
phia in 1955. The A’s front office
claims the current squad's aver-
age age is 3 years younger than
the club that shifted from Phila-
delphia.
