Washington, Jan. 28 GB — The
basic theme of Anglo-American
defense talks now starting in
Washington will be this :
The British will be better al-
lies of America if they ard
stronger. Therefore, anything
the United States can do to
strengthen Britain is to Ameri-
ca's own advantage.
The U. S. can, of course, do,
several things:
One is to give Britain money
to support its defense establish-
ment. The money might be in the
form of either a direct grant or
a loan.
The British, it is believed,
would not especially welcome an-
other loan. They are having dif-
ficulty paying the interest on out-
standing obligations and would
rather like to have that interest
cancelled.
The U. S. congress is not gen-
erally believed to be in a mood
to make any large grants. lt has

Words
The British would, briefly, like
access to American secrets on
the manufacture of modern guid-
ed missiles ... if not the missiles,
themselves. And the British can
support a- claim to such informa-
tion this way:
In World War 2, the British
opened their atomic files to the
United Stales and they claim that
the scientific knowledge they sup-
plied was a vital factor in devel-
oping the A-bomb.
Now, they will contend, they
have essential information about
rocketry. So has the United
States. Both nations might pur-
»u their separate courses, but
they can travel faster together.
Meanwhile, the United States
needs a strong ally in Europe,
and the unmistakable feeling that
Britain, traditionally an Ameri-
can ally, will be the stronger if
armed with the latest missiles,

in England. That gives the Brit-
ish a chance to earn American
dollars.
Or, we can simply lower trade
barriers and give the British a
better shot at the American mar-
ket
And there is something else
we can' do.
The United States has develop-
ed and continues to develop mil-
itary weapons of tremendous ca-
pacity.. There is a military theory,
not universally accepted, that big-
ger Weapons can. replace masses
of meft.
In other words, since an atom-
it bomb is in some ways equiva-
lent of rpughly a division of men,
we have \the effective power of
100 divisions if we have 100 A-
bombs ready for arming and de-
livery.
This theory is especially per-
suasive to the British right now.
The Suez adventure has put them
in severe if not desperate finan-
cial strains in some categories.
They would like very much to cut
their military establishment and
save money, but maintain the
same punch by using bigger and
more potent weapons.
But the British are not look-
ing for atomic weapons primari-
ly. The thing that most interests
them, it is said, is guided missiles.
The British are unhappily fam-
iliar with missiles — guided and
company says he cannot explain
the attack. He terms Watts one of
the most popular Americans in
the region. The firm is one of the
biggest in the southern Philip-
pines. Watts was 38 years old and
a native of Pleasant Plains in
Arkansas.

terday in Austin calling for a 3rd
state supported medical school
with a suggested location in San

-The. council suggested in its
resolution that the additional
medical school be located at San
Antonio “because of that eity’s
strong hospital and clinical facili-
ties necessary to a good training
program of a medical school.
State supported schools now in
operation are the University of

Indianapolis, Jan. 28 U1 ■— A
gunman held dp the congregation
of Joshua Baptist Church in In-
dianapolis Sunday as the 80-year-
old Reverend A. S. Oglesby com-
pleted reading the 100th psalm.
The gunman said: “Mr. Min-

vice, but this is a stickup.” Then,
warning that he already had kill-
ed one man, the bandit ordered
the women to throw their pocket-
books in the aisle. Four women
among the 56 worshippers com-
plied. After emptying out the
contents, the gunman a^ked any-
one with a $10 bill to throw it
out in the aisle. No one did.
After the gunman left, the
minister who shares pastoral dut-
