Caterpillar Hit
By Strikes
Peoria, 111., Oct. 11 CD—Some
14,000 United Auto Workers
went on strikevtoday at the Cat-
erpillar Tractor Company plants
in East Peoria and Decatur.
Another 6,000 UAW workers at
York, Pa., also were scheduled to
strike today as negotiations failed
last night for a new contract (be-
tween the union and Caterpillar.
UAW members at the three
Caterpillar plants have been
working under extension of an
old contract which expired July
31st. The extension was terminat-
ed on a 6-day notice last Sunday
night by Pat Greathouse, UAW
international vice president.
A major dispute has been a un-
ion demand for a master contract
covering the workers in all three
plants. Caterpillar contends con-
tracts" for each plant should be ne-
gotiated separately.
