For at least a century the ques-
tion of federation in the British
West Indies has been seriously
discussed. But in spite of the ad- j
vantage .which, always have, been 1
obvious to far sighted West In- (
dians, there were many difficult
before they were rescued. They
were working their way from the
mountainside where they crashed
to the seacoast—about 125 miles
distant.
The pilot of the downed plane,
Lieutenant Commander Glen
Lathrop, Jr., of Leeward, Calif.,
told the Navy that heavy Ice
formed on the wing of his sin-
ties in the way, some of them geo-; glt-engine craft. He said the ice
forced him off his course — and
into the mountainside.
Lathrop is quoted as saying the
crash was surprisingly gentle.
And that as soon as his men had
recovered from the initial shock
they collected usable equipment
from Uhe plane and made their
plans to save themselves.

The Spanish monopoly in the
new world1 was uncompromising.
Foreigners and foreign trade were
excluded by law and, where pos-
sible, by force.
It wasn’t until early in the 17th
century that Britain began to
take a serious interest uTthe area.
After many decades marked by
raids and counter-raids, the Span-
iards were ousted from some of
the islands. Later, a Spanish pow-
er gradually declined, a struggle
developed between Britain and
France fo>r control of thc sugar-
producing islands.
Toward the end of thc 18th
century tw,o things happened: the
Car ibbean began to go |nto a kind
of economic decline, and the Uni-
ted States began to show up as a
power. This economic decline has
continued not only for British
dependences but for the Carib-

Britain has promised economic,

gets under way. Eventually,
though, the federation will have
to make both ends meet by its
own efforts.
