ed in 1892.
The Democrat candidate,
who owns a large ranch out-
side Floresville, had a 6 to 1
lead over his Republican op-
ponent, Jack Cox, in Wilson
County voting.
Dallas, Nov. 7 l/P — The
Republicans rolled up the high-
est ballot percentage in a Tex-
as governor’s race since 1869
in yesterday’s voting.
Republican Jack Cox gained
45 per cent of the totul vote
in 1 o s i n g to Democrat John
Connally.
The highest previous per-
centage was in 1924 when Dr.
Cieorge Butte gained 41 per
cent of the total against Mrs.
Mariam A. Ferguson.
In that race the Republicans
were aided by some objections
to a woman being governor
and against Jim Ferguson, the
winner’s husband who had been
impeached as governor.
The only Republican govern-
or in the state’s history was E.
J. Davis, known as the father
of the GOP in Texas.
Davis was elected in 1869
when Urtion soldier guarded
the polls He heat A. J. Hamil-
ton by 800 votes and the result
was not announced until a
month after the election.
Davis ran two more times in
free elections and was soundly
i beaten each time.
