Special to The Post
New York August 5 W K Vanderbllt
has hurled a challenge In the face of J
Flerpont Morgan and a battle between
those giants Is on The fight began by a
cut In railroad rates which will affect all
travel between Chicago and New England
points The Vandcrbllt lines cut the
rates and the Chicago and Grand Trunk
mot tho cut Yesterday tho Erie railroad
which Is controlled by J Flerpont Mor-
gan tiled a protest and made an appeal
for arbitration
The real light lies between the Vnnder
bllt system and Its ally the Pennsylvania
against what aro known as tho differential
lines and It happens that the Erie which
Is controlled by Morgan is the first line
to show the effects ot the attack It Is
this fact which lends peculiar and popu
lar Interest to the warfare as the contest
narrows Itself to one between two men ot
unusual promlnenco In finance
Tho effect of such a battle will be In
calculable and may be felt by every sec-
tion ot America
