Whitaker, Foster, Alexander
to participate in FCA bowl

Optic-Herald Staff
Chase Whitaker and Tyler Fos-
ter will be members of the Red
team during the 2013 Fellowship
of Christian Athletes Fleart of a
Champion Bowl.
They were selected by area
coaches to participate in this All-
Star high school football game.
It will be played Saturday, June
15 at the Trinity Mother Frances
Rose Stadium in Tyler starting at
6:30 p.m.
Mr. Whitaker will play as a
linebacker, and Mr. Foster will be
an offensive lineman.
Mount Vernon Athletic Direc-
tor Mike Alexander will be the
defensive secondary coach for the
Red team.
Team members gathered in
Tyler beginning Wednesday, June
12. The teams will practice through staying in dorms at the Tyler Junior
Friday with the players and coaches College campus.

Abigail Kalynn Stone, a 2009
Mount Veron High School gradu-
ate, graduated from Baylor Uni-
versity on May 18 with a bachelor
of arts degree in film and digital
media.
She graduated with a 3.88 in her
major and 3.5 overall grade point
average She received a Dean’s List
recognition three times throughout
her four years in college.
During her senior year, she
traveled to New York for an in-
ternship with NBCUniversal at 30
Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan.
She is the daughter of Lloyd and
Tina Stone of Mount Vernon.

attended volleyball and bas-
ketball camp at the school
last week. Both camps were
conducted during the morn-
ing. Basic skills and tech-
niques for each sport were
discussed and practiced.

receive two at state

Five Mount Vernon High School
Tiger Band students performed at
the UIL Texas State Solo and En-
semble Competition on Monday,
May 27, 2013 in Austin and re-
ceived a second division rating.
Students Marcus Hollingsworth,
Jourdan Dewey, J.R. Haley, Tan-
ner Patterson, and Nicholas Poe
performed the brass quintet Die
Bankerlsangerl ider.
To qualify for the TSSEC, stu-
dents must perform a Level I piece,
the most difficult, and receive a first
division rating at the Region level.
The region contest was at Texas
A&M University - Commerce in
February.
“I want to congratulate these stu-
dents for their fine performance,”
said Band Director Tanya Eckstein.
Zach Bean was recognized as 2013 Who’s Who honoree
Bean honored by
Who's Who for 2013
Zach Bean, a Mount Vernon na-
tive, has been named a Who’s Who
Among Students in American Uni-
versities and Colleges for 2013.
He is a junior, kinesiology major
from Dallas Baptist University in
Dallas.
During his time at DBU, he has
served as a resident assistant, disci-
pleship chan for his fraternity Tau
Alpha Phi, and helped with Break-
down Ministries. He is a recipient
of the Ministerial Grant, Minnie K.
Patton scholarship and a scholar-
ship from the Baptist General Con-
vention of Texas.
He is the son of Michael Bean
and Kay Camiaday.
He was one of 36 students select-
ed for this honor at Dallas Baptist
University. Students were chosen
based on their grade point average,
participation and leadership within
school organization and extracur-
ricular activities, community in-
volvement, and future leadership
potential.

from more than 2,800 higher educa-
tion institutions across the country.
