BUSINESS
ternoon when the alarm of fire
was sent in from the Holbrook
residence in South Stockton. One
of the small children of the
household first discovered an
undue amount of smoke and
when he inquired as to the rea-
son, the alarm was quickly given
by Mrs. Holbrook. Fortunately
a gang of Bihl’s Mexicans were
grading the street in front of the
house and came immediately to
the rescue. What might have
been a serious conflagration but
for their assistance, proved to be
only a small blaze. The only
damage was a hole about four
feet square burned in the roof
and slight water damage.
Moral-Look well to your
flues before building your first
fire in the new stove. Also, it is
• good thing to have an adequate
street working force for more
reasons than one.
City Marshal Chaa. Schultz

other farm work necessary for
making a living? Not enough
attention it seems is being given
to the food on the family table.
Feeders know that the ration
of young stock should not be the
same as for older animals: work
horses and colts do not require
the same feed: calves and cows
must have protein, carbohy-
drates and fat in different pro-
portion. Yet the fact is often
overlooked that the requirements
of young children, older children
and farm hands need nutrients
in different proportions. Where
the family is composed of differ-,
ent ages and people doing differ-
ent kinds of work the housekeep-
er has a problem of supplying
the various needs in the foods
prepared.
Aside from economy, efficiency
must be considered. Health, vi-
tality and intelligence are all af-
fected to some extent by the
food eaten and the air breathed.
It is of paramount Importance
that the family have the right
kinds of foods and that they be
prepared in appetizing and eas-
ily digeatible ways.
As an eminent authority, the
late Mrs. Ellen H. Richard
tells us:
"The prosperity of the nation
depends upon the health and
morals of Ita citizens, and health
and morals of the people depend
mainly upon the food they eat
