JIMMY CARTER TALKS ABOUT HIS RELIGIOUS VIEWS
NASHVILLE — Jinmy Carter, who’s made himself a man to beet for the Democratic
Presidential nomination, has described himself as "a farmer, an engineer, a scientist, a
politican and a born-again Christian.” He is a Southern Baptist who is a member of the
Plains Baptist Church (right) in his hometown of Plains, Ga.
Mr. Carter was interviewed by Jim Newton, editor of the World Mission Journal, a
publication of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Brotherhood Commission, of which the
candidate is a trustee. Asked how he would as President “demonstrate your Christian
convictions,” Mr. Carter replied; “I would ask God for guidance on decisions affecting our
country and make those decisions after evaluating the alternatives as best I could.”
In answer to the question of what roie his Christian beliefs played in his decision to run
for President, Mr. Carter said he agreed with theologian Relnhold Niebuhr that “the
purpose of government is to establish justice in a sinful world.” Ibe former Georgia
governor said he believes “God wants me to be the best politician I can possibly be." (RNS)
How to read the Bible
CHICAGO — People should
avoid “battling through
boring'’ parts of the Bible
according to a scripture
scholar interviewed for a
national magazine.
Father Barnabas Ahern,
C.P., offers tips for successful
reading of the Bible in the
June issue of U.S. CATHOLIC,
published here by the
Claretian Fathers.
Ahern suggests that people
“be selective” when they read
the Bible. “ ‘Find the passages
which say the most to you,”
Ahern recommends, instead
of reading all of the Bible “out
of a sense of duty.”
The priest says using a
biblical commentary for
background information is
helpful. He also recommends
that readers:
+Recognize the Bible is a
story with tremendous per-
sonal meaning. “It is God’s
‘good news' you are reading
and not merely human
historical record,” Ahern
notes.
-hIdentify themselves with
the characters. “The Bible is a
news story in which you have
a role,” Ahern says. By pick-
ing out a story and identifying
oneself with the feelings end
reactions of one character one
day and another character in
the same story another day
and asking “how often our
reactions are like” that of a
particular character one
brings “active attention” to
the reading of scripture.
CARDINAL GREETS SPAIN’S ROYAL COUPLE
NEW YORK—Cardinal Terence Cooke of New York, left, welcomes King Juan Carlos and
Queen Sophie of Spain before a banquet honoring the royal couple at the Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel. In behalf of the Catholic community, the cardinal said “we recall with gratitude the
role which Spain played as a friend and supporter in our own struggle for independence.”
Noting that many people of Spanish background live in New York, he said, “we are
particularly grateful for Spanish traditions in which Integrity, piety and devotion to family
are so manliest.” (RNS)

All of us have experienced
how an image or an idea of
some divine truth can make
the actuality of it come alive
and take on new meaning.
Take for instance the fact and
understanding of God’s love
for us. Let us picture to our-
selves just what that really
means.....
Since “God is Love,” love
sums up all His divine ac-
tivity: the Father, full of Love,
expressing Himself divinely in

His perfect reflection, His
Eternal Word; the mutuality
of their Love is the Third
Divine Person, Himself in-
finitely vehement Love, whom
we name the Holy Spirit. Is it
not a ponderous thought that
all that passes between the
Father and the Son — all their
eternal mutual activity — is
poured into us? This is exactly
what St. Paul meant’’ when he
told us that “The charity of
God is poured forth into our
hearts by His Spirit, which is
given to us.” Jesus Himself
stated it simply, saying, “As
the Father has loved Me, so
also have t loved you.” (by
giving us the Holy Spirit, their
Love-G’ft to each other!) We
are taught that Jesus’ sacred
and human Heart is the
practical medium used for the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit;
that the glorified Christ is the
bearer, dispenser and
mediator of the Holy Spirit.
Just as He breathed upon His
apostles and they received the
Holy Spirit, He breathes upon
us in our Christian life,
through the Sacraments of His
Church.
Love calls for response.
True devotion has been
defined as: “The love of the
soul that corresponds to the
Love of God; the gift of the
creature who tries to be
grateful for the Divine Gift,
the human cooperation that
receives the loving” and ef-
ficacious action of God.
May our response be
profound and constant as life
itself, a very way of living.
With our hearts open to a Love
that is divine, let us be ready
to receive the unspeakable
Gift at all times, with a
docility that molds our
everyday living according to
God’s divine plan. This is what
it means for a truth to “come
alive.” This is what it means
to “walk in the truth.”
