Recreation is a new cost
factor when determining if a
dam’s cost may be jUistifigd.
This country in trieTast 10
years has seen boating ffsfiing.

double triple, quadruple, and
double again.
New industries arid busin-

$2 billion dollars

from sales of water-sporting
equipment. —
This is indeed a factor to

10th ANNUAL BANKERS BANQUET HAS T-BONE POINT OUT CONSERVATION FAC1-
By Gene Ehrlich’, Lipscomb
County Soil conservation
District Supervisor
“People, People, People,
That’s what makes a conser-
vation program work in any
given area,’’ stated Leon
McDonald, former Ass’t. State
Conservationist, at the
Annual Banker Awards Ban-
quet last Thursday night in
Follett.
The Oklahoma conser-
vationist and lecturer gave
the highlight and feature
speech of the meeting and
what a speech it was. “Man
writes his history on the
land and how he cares for the
land shows itself for all to
see,” he stated.
The bankers gave out
awards to Sam Reger, Follett;
Henry Schoenhals, Booker;
E.L. Weinette, Darrouzett; and
David F. Yauck, Follett.
This group of four men
received silver platters from
the bankers in recognition of
their accomplishments.
Together the group accom-
plished the following: 1012
acres of Conservation croppr
ing, 960 acres stubble mulch,
41 miles of terraces, shaped
11 waterways, grassed 31
acres of waterways, and com-
pleted 2 miles of diversions.
Also receiving certifi-
cates in recognition for out-
standing phases of conser-
vation were: Paul Babitzke,
Jr.; Jennie Mason, for tenant-
landlord cooperation; J.L.
Stuart, brush spraying; Henry
Yauck, grassed waterways;
Henry J. Meier, 100% conser-
vation applied on his land;
J.M. Laurie, terracing 960
acres all on rented land; Vic-
tor Miller carried out grass
seeding; Max Suess earned a
certificate for stubble mulch-
ing; Vernon Schultz, range
mangement; and Florence
Guipel, earned a certificate
for terracing, she is a Cali-
fornia resident.
The tenth annual County
Banker’s Awards banquet has
as its sponsors The First
National Bank, Darrouzett,
The First National Bank,
Higgins, Texas; First State
Bank, Booker, Texas; and
The Follett National Bank,
Follett, Texas.
Bankers wh head the
institutions are Gerald Laugh
lin, Morris Lemon, Charlie
Phillips, and D.O. Murray.
Max Blau pointed out
Conservation trends in an
early speech in the program.
He pointed out the early dams
of the cattle ranchers who
made them for water purposes.
Joe Imke, chairman of
Lipscomb County Soil Con-
servation District, received
the Texas Bank and Trust
Co. award. He also presented
covered wagon awards to the
County Bankers in recognition
of their fine sponsoring
effort.
Mr. Blau pointed out an
important factor in trends was
the constant technique of
improvement. He called attent-
ion to the fact that terraces
used to be so steep farmers
couldn’t stay on the terraces
with their machinery.. Then
came the broadbased and
parallel terraces.
But wisecracking and
j oking McDonald was the
big ’gun of the evening, He
lived up to his nickname
T-Rone.
He was as lusty a{
