No one ever comes out of a
battle with sin without bearing
scars, Jacob wrestled with an
. , angel, but he was forever after
lame. We may "bruise the head
of the serpent," but the serpent
\may bruise our "heel," We may
battle with the enemy, but there
will be long and bitter memories.
Reverses, defeats and skirmishes
—these are all along the road to
salvation.
There is ho such thing os
winning a battle with tempta-
tion, or bearing patiently the
stings and arrows of evil
tongues and then reposing in
the cool shade. There are no
ik plains in the spiritual life; we
aro either going up hill or com-
ing down. If wo meet a mo.
men to 'v clearing, it is usually
a prelude to pushing ahead a-
midist sharper thorns and thick-
^ cr brambles.
It is in the Missions as it is in
r. our spiritual life. We win North-
^!em Africa in the third century,
produce our Augustines, Cypri-
ans, Tertullirms and Perpetuas,
- and then see it all overwhelmed
by the Moslems. We convert
Egypt, produce hermits and
saints, then rush off to the con-
aversion of Europe. We are anni-
*MIate& in China and then have
Formosa to delight the preachers
of the Word of God,
We collect $ '.27 from each
Catholic in the United States
for die Holy Father to support
150,000 missionaries; 6 0 ,0 0 0
Nf schools; 6,000 hospitals and
dispensaries, but then have to

the price of a cocktail a year
to raise the Cross in pagan
lands.
No victory is final; that we
will not see until heaven. Hence
Our Lord said: "Take up your
cross daily"-—not on Sundays'on-
ly, not even just yearly.
Last week we visited a woman
in a hospital who had an opera-
tion for cancer a few years ago.
Immediately afterwards she be-
gan working In order to help the
poor and afflicted in the world.
She made $1000. As tin disease
recurred, she asked that this
hard earned money be given to
the Holy Father through the So-
ciety for the Propagation of the
Faith that she might more inti-
mately belong to the Lord not
only in her suffering but also in
her charity.
How we too will wish at
Judgment that we had never
let a day pass without some
little victory over self. As
John XXIII said: "St, Marga-
ret Mary told us, 'Blessed are
they who can look back on a
life that was full of devotion
to the Sacred Heart’; but I say
•twice blessed arc those who
can look /back on a life spent
In serving Uh© Society for the
Propagation- of the Faith.”
GOD LOVE YOU TO D. A. for
$40 "My daughter had two weeks
pay stolen from her purse, but
was very lucky in getting it
back a week later. I promised
that the share of,her pay that
she always gives me, would go
to the Missions, if lier money
was returned. They need it more
than I do.*} To T. W. for $5 "I
promised that I would send you
$5.00 in Thanksgiving for a safe
delivery. That seems a small
price to pay for such a bles-
sing." To K. J. and D. "This
two dollars would have been
spent for cookies for two weeks,”
To T. B.'“ for $1 “Tell Bishop
Sheen to take these pennies from
my bank and buy some poor
boys some bacon and eggs.”

Hudson Acres Is a- Latin Com-
munity between Highway 9 and
44, and is one mile on the Cor-
pus Christi side of Clarkwood. It
has a population of 170 families
including the families from Me*
Norton Addition. Until the last
two years these families never
had a Church, the Mass nor a
priest. The parish, of Violet was
too extensive for the pastor,
Monsignor Hennel, to look after
everybody's spiritual needs. The
Hudson Acres district is within
the boundaries of Violet parish.
Help was needed.
For some years the Sisters of
the Incarnate Word Convent,
Corpus Christi, taug.it Catechism
to the children of Hudson Acres
in the garages of a few devout
families. The children then went
to the parish church at Violet or
to the mission church at Clark-
wood to receive their FirstvHoly
Communion. But what happened
later? Without a church of their
own; without the Mass; without
a priest to guide them spiritual-
ly, the people-men, women and
children—b e g a n gradually to
drift away from the practice of
their religion. Added to that,
non-Catholic religions were try-
ing to establish a foothold in the
area. The homes were besieged
with the Witnesses of Jehovah,
the Baptists, Pentecostals, pros-
letizing for false religions. This
fact was brought to the attention
of our Bishop. He met the pro-
blem fairly and squarely. One
hundred and seventy families
were. in danger of losing their
precious faith. A priest must be
sent to assist the pastor and to
minister to'the needs of the la-
tin families spiritually. Mass was
said in the Gutierrez home, 1202
Main Drive, every Sunday and
holy day. But Mass in a home
was not the answer to the pro-
blem. It, however, was the found-
ation on which to build, thanks
to the Gutierrez family. A Church
was a necessity.

The Womens Club was formed.
Their activities were the raising
of funds towards the' church pro-
ject. Every week saw the mem-

kool-ade and many well-known
Mexican dishes.

The Legion of Mary was esta-
blished to make a census of the
area and to guide the people in
spiritual matters. Catholic news-
papers were sold. Bulletins were
delivered weekly to every home.
A religious goods store was open-
ed to provide the people with
prayer books, rosaries and other
religious articles. The Rosary
was recited In every home tor
three consecutive nights. TJie
congregation at Mass grew lar-
ger until it was necessaary to
have a make-shift Mass Center

loved Bishop.
The Mens Club began. Their
activities: voluntary labor in the
erection of a Church: giving as-
sistance to the families in need:
and the guidance of our youth.
Hours of recreation were sacri-
ficed to make a home in Hudson
Acres, for Our Divine Lord. Bar-
becues and Fiestas were sche-
duled to raise funds for the build-
ing materials. Days, weeks and
months of toil have now brought
their efforts t0 reality.
RESULTS OF THESE EFFORTS
Our Lady of the Rosary Church
has been established through vo-
luntary labor and is near comple-
tion after 21 months. Two Masses
every Sunday have capacity
crowds at 7:00 A. M. and 10:00
A M. The latter is a sung Mass
under the direction of the Sisters
of Mount Tabor Convent, Calal-
Icn. Mass is celebrated also
every Holy Day at 6:00 A. M.
and 7:00 P. M,; on the Tuesday
of every week at 6:00 A. M. and
on First Fridays at 7:00 F. M.
Confessions are scheduled for
Saturdays at 10:uo A M. and 4:30
F. M. Cathechism is taught by
the Sisters on Saturdays and
Sundays at 9:00 A. M. Discus-
sion Group Classes are held dur-
ing the academic year for all
the teenagers. Last year ended
with 106 on the roll of which
there was an 85 per cent at-
tendance weekly.
AMBITIONS OF OUR MISSION
The work continues with the
Mens and Ladles Clubs. A wall
is being erected at the front of
the church. The parking lot has
been measured off. The grotto
of Our Lady of the Rosary is
down for construction. Finally,
it is the ambition of the Hudson
Acres Mission, with the permis-
sion of our beloved Bishop, to
build a recreational hall in. the
near future as a center for our
mission activities or, at least,
the activities of the Catholic
men,, women and children of our
district.
Our mission has been on the
mardh for the past 21 months.
God sees the hearts of the peo-
ple. He knows their zeal. He has
repaid them well for their efforts.
And He will continue to repay
them ifor their unstinting labors
in defense of His Church and Di-
vine Religion; in defense of tfie
Holy Mass, the sacrifice of His
Son on the Cross of Calvary; and
In defense of their fidelity devo>
tion to the Mother of God, Our
Lady of the Rosary.
