THE 49 TH STATE
AS SEEN BY A NATIVE OF THE
SECOND LARGEST STATE
By ARCH McCARTY
Because of the interest
of so many in knowing more
about our new state and
neighbor (Alaska) and
partly because of my recent
visit there leaving me with
a bit of over-enthusiasm,
I am glad to tell of the
many thrills I found on the
short trip.
I feel people who have
been there will want to
hear something about what
is being done, and expected
to be done since their ab-
sence. Naturally, one likes
to recall former days of
interesting places, and to
know of it’s changing or
lack of changing compara-
tive to man’s changing
world. There are some, who
like myself, regard the law
of nature a very efficient
authority deserving a lot
more jurisdiction than is
being given by man in most
parts of this restless world.
Too often we are guilty of
contradicting nature’s ways
and establishing our own
Ideals, rather than working
with nature to the benefit
of mankind. Also, because
so many loyal Americans
proudly feeling an interest
in that big ice box are
eager to look inside to see
just what has been handed
them, I will tell them of
my findings.
With my brother Homer
McCarty of Oklahoma City
a trip to Alaska was started
June 8, 1963, with the in-
tent to travel as much of
the big state as our six
weeks would permit, and
as road travel could be had.
At this time of year all
connecting highway systems
are usually open and pass-
able. We left Oklahoma
City about 10:30 a m. with
our speedometer reading ;
at 795 miles.
Booker, Texas was our
first overnight stop where
we visited friends and
acquaintances that stormy
evening. We were encour-
aged by many expressions
of “good wishes for a
successful trip*’. The
threatening clouds with their
downpour of rain and very
TEEVEE PROGRAM: SEPT. 15—21
little wind damage brought
smiles of cheer instead of
expected trouble. We sleep
in the car, and carry a few
groceries and camping
equipment.
Starting from Booker with
our speedometer at 1032,
June 9, we traveled No. 3
Highway to Colorado and on
287 to Lamar, then No. 50 to
Salida where we camped for
the night. The temperature
was a little above freezing.
Our reading is now at an
even 1500 miles at our camp
iy2 miles south of Salida.
It’s not that I wish not to
meet with the Church on
Sundays, but on this day, as
all other days while we were
on this trip I am guilty of
skipping. I hope that my love
for the scenic beauty of
nature will not sway me from
thoughts of the Creator of
that beauty.
Monday morning we drove
by way of Aspen to Glenwood
Springs, Rifle, Meeker and
Artesia to Dinosaur Park.
We enjoyed the : beautiful
scenery along the Arkansas
River and other parts of
Colorado. We camped in the
beautiful camping ground of
the park.
Tuesday, June 11, we
visited a National Monument
and Quarry with it’s true and
inspiring story that has wait-
ed over the millions of years
to be told. It is well worth
the few hours we spent in
beneficial pleasure. Thous-
ands of school children have
visited this great school-
room of the historical past,
and many no doubt, have re-
turned many times to see the
wonders of fossilized skele-
tons of dinosaurs and turtles,
as well as the tropical plants
in fossil form being unveiled
to all lovers of nature’s great
story.
Men with jackhammers
keep cutting away the rock
from the buried bones of the
animals in the wall of the
quarry, exposing more and
more of the world’s most re-
markable dinosaur fossel
deposits.
