Something to Sell Every Day Na
tional Cotton Association
Tho great cotton convention
which was hold in New O rleons last
week has emphasized in no umistaka
bio terms that tho prosperity of tho
South is dependent upon diversifica-
tion that the wolfaro and happiness of
every farmer every merchant and ev-
ery banker is to have each farmer prac-
tice divereication so that ho may con-
trol bis cotton instead of being con-
trolled by Hj that ho must make it a
Burplus crop and not a solo dependent
The South is rich in fertile lands and
an equitable climate to produce all the
great food crops of tho world and with
livestock becomo the most independent
and prosperous section There 1b no
other section of tho Union that can
produce as great a variety of crops as
tho South
Tho National Cotton Association
stands for tlio reduction of the cotton
acreage and the consequent incrcaso in
diversification Our plan is to have a
community of interest between tho
farmer the meichant tho hanker and
tho local paper for diBverBification
along such lines as will bo to the best
interest of each individual community
And in this work tho National Cotton
Association haB tho support and in
dorsement of tho farmers tho mer
chentB tho bankers newspapers spin-
ners and th6 legitimate handlers of cot-
ton It also has in this tho support of
every fiiend and wellwisher of the
farmer and thoso who are really work-
ing fot tho prosperity and upbuilding
of the South
There should bo a community of in-
terest and a close organization between
tho farmersand bankers and tho editor
of each local newspaper of every school
district of tho South not only as to cot-
ton but as to all other crops that can
bo raised with profit
WHAT HAVE WE DONE
The National Cotton Association has
received reports from tho school pre-
cinct meetings that more than 400000
farmers bankers and merchants are
pledged to a reduction of the cotton
acreage and adoption of diversification
This work will be kept up through the
local committee of each school precinct
cotton association until every farmer in
the southern states has been pledged to
diversification and a reduction of the
cotton acreage
More than 2000 editors of local pa-
pers throughout tho South have replied
to our personal letters and said that
they will carry a department in each
issue on Diversification
DIVERSIFICATION
Diversification means first that ev-
ery farmer should set aBido a sufficient
amount of land to produce all the food
and forage he will need for his own
consumption
Second Then plant a little moro of
such crops as ho can sell for cash each
month in the year in his local market
or together with his neighbors make-
up a shipment for the larger market
and in this each one wants the advice
of his local banker merchant and edi-
tor
Third When thoso two are provided
for then plant your cotton crop Make
cotton your surplus crop
With tho poasiblo exception of Texas
thero is not a southern state that raises
enough corn oats and other grains to
supply the homo demand and every
year your cotton money goes to swell
tho wealth of the western grain farmer
Tho following shows tho production
in tho various cotton states of corn in
1904
State Bushels
North Carolina 40 705478
South Carolina 22189837
Georgia 47334713
Florida 0640331
Alabama 41877105
Mississippi 39709661
Louisiana 27258443
Texas 13G702G99
Arkansas 48332014
Tennessee 80890025
There is no reason why tho South
should import corn but thero is every
reason why wo should not only raise
enough for our own consumption but
make it an article of export Every
southern state is nearer the great ex-
port markets of the world thau tho
great Central West which is now sup-
plying these markets
Start a campaign in your school pre-
cinct association for more corn Thero
are farmers in every community who
always make a success in raising corn
lot them tell you how to do it Thero
is more money in corn at 50 cents h
bushel than cotton at 6 cents a pound
