handed principle.
In Catholic family life, the
principle of the indissolubility of
marriage is inflexible. Politi-
cians who wish to be good! Ca-
tholics are confronted with the
Church’s obstinate refusal to see
anything but evil in the idea of
‘honest graft.’*
But nowhere is Catholicism
more uncompromising than in
the matter of Charity, the abso-
lute necessity of loving our neigh-
bors. For Christ and love are
synonyms.
Yet, despite Christ’s parable
of the good. Samaritan, many
Catholics insist on drawing the
| line in their practice of love.
Some make an exception of the
colored people, some of Jews,

which they have developed an
aversion. Here, more than any-
where else, Christianity is true
to itself only when it stands re-
lentlessly opposed to such an
attitude.
Edmund Burke’s wanning, "You
cannot indict a whole nation,* *
must be echoed constantly by Ca-
tholic men and women against

RACIAL CHARITY
If character is "life dominated
by principle,” then the true Ca-
tholic should stand out as a man
of character. For practically eve-
ry concern of his life brings him
at some time or other to a situ-
ation where his religion demands
that he
try, ‘‘You cannot indict a whole
race"; adherence to this rigid
principle is the first line of de-
fense against that barbaric ra-
cial hatred which is death to
Christianity and Democracy a-
like.
The Catholic laymen, exposed
to the social and economic 'pres-
sure of this day, can easily give
way to hate for people with
whom he has to live, work, and
do business. It is a simple step
from a particular dislike to ha-
tred of a whoa race or nationali-
ty, ■ especially when that is the
current fashion. But it is a fatal
step, and wholly anti-Christian.
Hatred for a person has never
done any good. Hatred for a
race, for a color-group, a nation-
ality, or a religious sect, has
brought more tragedy into his-
tory than the vilest forms of lust.
Group-hatred Is man's closest
approach to beastliness, for it
makes of him an animal of prey.
Anti-Semitism is rampant in
this country. Injustice to the Ne-
gro is ore of the worst blots on
America’s record. And history
has yet to record what other
forms of racial hatred will be
injected into American. life by
the present Cold War.
Does the Church ask her faith-
ful to disregard social conflicts
and shut their eyes to the faults
of hits or that person or group?
The love that Christianity preach-
es is not sentimentalism, Where-
ever there is injustice, unfair-
ness, dishonesty, sharp practice,
we have a right to attack it .vi-
gorously. But the Church asks
us to be tough-minded in matters
of essential importance. When
wr are lowerinsr our r eslstance
to racial hatred, then tough-
minded Christianity is needed. It
is easier to yield when the
crowd hisses: "He’s a Jew—
they’re all crooked.” It is easier
to nod the head when a wise-
acre reveals that “...the Ne-
groes are all lazy good-for-
nothings.” But then it is that
we have to stand pat on a
Christian principle that History
will confirm over and over a-
gain: "You cannot indict a whole
race.”
We not not stop there. History
will show that it Is not entirely
the fault of the Jews if they
have developed unique racial
Characteristics. And if we point
to the so-called backwardness of
the Negroes, wo really summon
the attention of the world to one
of the most alarming Insults that
white Christians have offered
Christ.
Attack specific social evils,
then, wherever they are found.
But not as ‘Jewish* dishonesty,
‘Negro’ delinquency, or ‘Protest-
ant* bigotry: for there are no
such things, as characteristics of
a group or race, any more than
we can speak of ‘Catholic’ dis-

honesty, although certainly some
Catholics can be accused.
In a nation where one minority
can be persecuted, any minority
can. expect the same treatment.
If Catholics allow this hatred to
be unleashed, they not only be-
tray Christ, but they sign their
own death warrant.
