FT IIow Or Think?
by Mary Ballowe
’’Individuality is everywhere to be spared
and respected as the root of everything good."
--Richter.
A strong herd instinct is prevalent in
the best of us. We tend to lapse into a peri-
od of time when we allow others to take over
as leaders. Temporarily this is all right,
but sometimes we let others keep their leader-
ship for long periods of time. In short, we
would rather be followers than leaders; we are
afraid to be different.
Mankind needs to be individualistic. Yet
it is feared by man! It is said that it de-
stroys friendly organizations, separates pacts,
and can lead to war.
People often would rather "follow the
crowd" than their own moral intuition. It
takes no more effort to say '’no" than "yes,"
but it takes courage and strength of character
to stick to this decision. Shall we try this
new ideal? Shall we allow ourselves to be re-
ferred to as sheep or chickens?
"That life only is truly free which rules
and suffices for itself." --Bulwer._
DEAD END !
Texans are proud of their state and rightly so, but
some facts issued by the Governor's Committee on educa-
tion beyond the high school should shake some out of
their complacency.
Did you know that with the exception of one state,
Texas leads the nation in the number of persons 25
years old or older who have completed less than five
years of formal schooling. Texas ranks 31st in the
average number of school years completed by persons 25
years or older. Fewer than half of the Texas children
who start the first grade will remain in school long
enough to receive high school diplomas.
What are the reasons for so many drop-outs? Typi-
cal reasons for dropping out are: going to work, dis-
like of school, marriage, failing courses (eight of
every ten dropouts have failed at least one year),
needed at home, left home, and administrative requests.
If one is thinking of dropping out of school, he
should take heed from some who have traveled that road.
An l8-year~old who quit at 16 and has since returned
remarked, "I would tell everyone considering dropping
out for any reason to forget it. There are so many
opportunities for a person who will only take advantage
of them."
"Please stay; you need a diploma for your self-
confidence as well as your children," was the advice
of a housewife, now in her thirties with three children
who dropped out at 17*
Remember when one decided to terminate his studies
before completing his education, he is taking a fatal
step on the road to a "dead-end life."

Have you ever wondered
what people in foreign
countries think of our
school activities ? M ary
Ballowe recently wrote to
her aunt in Australia tell-
ing her she had joined pep
squad. Her aunt question-
ingly wrote back asking
what kind of athletic sport
"pep squad" was?
Everyone seemed quite
surprised to find Vickie
Purdue to be the "mystery"
person of the week. Gary
Tepfer, one of our senior
football players, was the
winner of the cake. It has
been heard that the foot-
ball boys sure enjoyed the
cake Friday night after the

The Freshman World His-

Judaism, Islam, Taoism, and

unit on Religion.
Coach Grave’s American
History class recited the
Preamble to the Constitu-
tion, Friday October 16.
The Preamble states six
reasons for the establish-
ment of our constitution.
They were called the
History Recital class be-
cause they just never get
a chance to a recital like
everyone else.
The Chemistry cl asses

many experiments last Fri-

which was considered to
have many loop-holes, was
on the use of a bunsen
burner.
The most important sin-

ment was to give the stu-
dents practice in using
