The dpath angels visited tbe home of
Mr and Mrs JG Bender on the night
of Sept 19th 1906 and carried away the
precious soul of their oldest child littlo
Jewelupon whom so many bright hopes
were ceutered Dear littlo Jewell was in
her 10th year of ageand a sweetlovablo
child and possessed an extraordinary
bright intellect and all other attributes
which constitute noble humanity
She was taken with black jaundice
Friday previous to her death and after
all that could be done by loving hands
of earth God took her unto Himself to
baBk in the sunlight of her Saviour
Oh how hard to give up our little dar-
ling yet God makes no mistakes and
may He enable us to bow in bumble
submission to His will Truly tho
Lord giveth and tbe Lord taketh away
The homo is so lonely and oh so drear
Without little Jewell dear
Our hearts are crushed as buds by
blight
Sinco her sweet visage has gone from
sight
God the Father who knew best
Bade her tomo and sweetly rest
In a home of purer light
And be an angei ever bright
Budded on earth to bloom in heaven
This precious flower to God is given
Now sweet Jewell wo hay good bye

COI WELCHS REPLY
Jefferson Texas Sept 25 1906
Will tho Jimplecute pleaBO
through its colums permit mo to
correct to some extent a etato
ment that appeared in your iBsuo
Sept 8th as a special to Ft
Worth dated from Columbus O
in which tbe reporter must have
drawn largely upon his imagina-
tion Tho facts of the occasion of
my being called upon to address
the comrades of the Fourth Ohio
Vol Reg was purely accidental
before reaching Columbus upon
tho train a comrade member of the
Fourth Ohio persuaded mo to atop
oyer with him und accompany him
to their reunion losing thereby
only one train in reachingmy final
destination Mt Veinon O I had
explained to him in brief tho fra-
ternal feeling existed now between
those men who bad worn tho Blue
and those who had worn the Gray
when wo battled for what we both
believed to be right the Supreme
Court of Arms after four years
continuation had decided against
them and they as good American
lawabiding citizons had accepted
the decision as final and their re-
newed fealty to the Flag should
challenge our admiration as brave
chivalrous loyal men Upon en-
tering the Hall I found that they
were engaged in a business meet-
ing and aB soon as the matter was
disposed of under discussion the
president announced that a com-
rade from Texas was present bus-
iness wqbsuspended and I was in-
vited to take the stand and address
them After explaining that I had
stopped over one train on my way
to meet with my comrades of two
regiments of which I had formerly
been a member of the 87th and the
125th O V I who would convene
at Warren Trumbull Co O on
tho 11th and 12th and that I
would trespass but a few momenta
upon their time only long enough
to show tbom that Congress bad
by authorizing the return to the
Southern States of those captured
flags was a benificent act returned
to the survivors of tho gallant and
braVe men who had so bravely
borne them at the battles front
nowto be forever furled and laid
away as a cherished relic of n
cause which they had once loved
but was now lost nevermore to be
resurrected and under whose folds
so many of their bravest had fallen
And now the Stars and Stripes
Old Glory is the only flag to be
seen in all Texas floating over
courthouses postoffices and school-
houses and other places on gala
occasions to please the multitude
whenever assembled Toreinforce
my statements as additional evi-
dence I read to the comrades there
assembled the letter of grooting
from Dick Taylor Camp of UCV
so kindly given me to be presented
and read when I should reach my
own rogimental reunion they and
they alone were authorized to re-
ceive it or to take any action
thereon Standing as I did at the
front of the platform where 1 could
see all over the hall and hear as I
held uloft a small silk representa-
tive of the Stars and Bars about
six inches square I affirm that the
only sounds I heard was a slow
murmur of two or three comrades
saying Yes that is the old flag
I heard no cries Shoot it Fire
on the flag If I had heard any
such cries from any of thecomradeq
there present who had worn the
blue I should have resented it then
and there aB a personal insuitto
myself and to my brothers who
hud worn tho Gray who hqd voted
to instruct their commander and
adjutant to formulate tbe same and
given me to present in a spirit of
brotherly kindness I say f I had
hoard and I do not know how I
COJhUhayejscaped tho hearing if
it had been uttered by any one
present I should have denounced
them in the most vigorous soathing
language at my command and
there might perhaps havo been a
riot sure enough for I had friends
there who would have stood by me
as in tho days of the 60s
There wbb a roporter proBent and
his imagination assisted by bis
powers of invention ho no doubt
thought to fire tbe Southern demo-
cratic heat by tolegrapbing that

THE OPPORTUNITY
FOR A GAS WELL
A proposition has heen submitted
to the citizens of Jefferson byVas
and oil experts and capitalists Jo
put down a test well the citizens
paying onehalf the cost of the
well This is tbe opportunity tl
peoplo have long boeu lookinr
and should not hesitate to take it
up A well 1200 feet deep will
cost 5000 tho people paying
2500 If an outsider is willing to
risk 2500 should our people hesi-
tate one moment they have every-
thing to gain Your profit if goB is
found will be in increasing the
value of your property beyond any-
thing dreamed of It is estimated
that tbe city itBelf would pay a
revenuo to tho well of 15000 per
annum Factories of every olasB
flock to ch ap fuel Surely there
is not a citizen in the town who
will not join hands in this the
greatest proposition yet submitted
to our people Let no one falter
Do not hunt for objections but act
promptly
