Archer City, Texas
November 2%? 1981
Mayday is an exciting
story of two young people
feeing extraordinary hard-
ships .with courage and
self-reliance.
When Allison Parker and
her mother joined the Bras-
fields on a flight from New
Orleans to Birmingham, Ala-
bama, they had no idea that
there was trouble ahead*.
The morning of the
flight, Lou Bras field
checked his single engine
plane-and found no prcblem,
But a weather front changed
a pleasant flight into a
night of terror.
The single engine craft
crashes on a mountainside,
and only Allison and her
friend, Mark Brasfield, are
able to go find help. In-
jured and frightened, they
force themselves to leave
the crash site and make
their way down the mountain,
A pack of hungry wild dogs
began following them, but
they must push themselves
on,,* for four lives are
depending on them.

Grandma's
by 3.J. Miller.
A; high school student stoops to help a
first grader who jusis dipped his pfgrars, books,
and lunch pail on the front lawn of the school.
Another student, a senior, takes a young father-
less boy deer hunting for his very first time.
Two girls walk arm-in-arm down the hall, one
consoling the other, "That’s okay, things will
get better, you’ll seel" An all-points bulle-
tin is out warning the public of possible dan-
ger when two patients in the Wichita Palls
State Hospital have escaped, A student calls
her teacher to make sure that she has received
the message, Students turn out for every foot-
ball game although 1981 can hardly be described
as a winning season. Instead of apathy, the
fans yell louder, pride in their school and
the Wildcat mascot visible on their faces. And
oh, what a. lesson I have learned watching all
of these subtle tell-tale signs that we so
often overlook or take for granted.
If, for perhaps one monent, you should
think that you must attain some magical age,
or get a college degree or earn money for your
labor prior to nliving” please look around you
once again.
Monuments are usually thought of as a sym-
bol of having once passed through this world;
the stone marks the day and time of such a
brief span^on earth. But building those monu-
ments is an everyday thing. There is no magic
in kindness. There is no magic in caring,
Thore is np magic In touching another16 life'.'
And what is more, there is no magical time in
which this will all commence.
For you are building you monuments now.
You have touched each others 1 lives as you
have touched mine. Each kind thing you say or
do • renders anonymous the few "hard11 times.
This Thanksgiving and Christmas season I am
personally saying a special "thanks." My life
is richer because of each and every one of you
that I have met. As a new member of your fac-
ulty, you have "tried" me a few thousand times
but reached out a few thousand more,
I know that if Bill -were here, he would
want to join me in wishing each of you a truly
loving Thanksgiving, one filled with the peace
of heart that comes with knowing that you are
now the kind of person you want to become.
