move was not really sud-
den. The idea had always
been in his mind, but he
was just waiting for the
right opportunity.
"I always knew that if the
right spot came open, I'd
like to do that," he said of
becoming a superintendent.
"In 20 years, I applied for
two jobs and this was one
of them."
He and his family wanted
a place they would be com-
fortable in, since his grand-
children would be attend-
ing school there. They also
wanted to know people in
the community and school
district.
"I wanted to stay within
the region because of the
people I already know," he
said, adding his years in
Seymour put him in touch
with many educators and
administrators he can now
use as resources when
needed.
Roach said he was sur-
prised when Tom Bailey
announced his plans to re-
tire at the start of 2014, but
knew Olney was the place
for him.
"I've known Mr. Bailey for
years, as well as some of the
teachers and campus ad-
ministration," he said.
Though the learning curve
has been sharp, Roach said
he is thrilled with his choice
to come to Olney.
"I just love this business,"
he said, noting that he loves
having to draw on knowl-
edge of everything from
psychology to educational
matters, buildings, electrici-
ty, plumbing and more. "It's
a profession that takes ev-
erything I've ever learned
and I'm able to apply every
drop of it every day."
So far, Roach said he and
his wife, Nancy, and their
grandchildren are thor-
oughly enjoying Olney
and have been thrilled
with the support they have
received every step of the
way. And, now that they
are here and he has a job
he waited years to find,
Roach said there are no
plans to leave.
"We like the small-town
atmosphere," he said. "We
like roots."
He took the job at Electra in
2012 as the Tigers, a 1A Divi-
sion II team, came off of six
non-winning seasons. That
year the Tigers went 7-4 (3-2
district) and made it to the
bi-district playoff round. In
2013, the Tigers missed the
playoffs but still racked up
a 64: record overall. The Ti-
gers, under Young's leader-
ship, defeated Olney 33-0 in
2012 and 51-28 in 2013.
As for his plans for the ath-
letic program, Young said his
goal is to be a supporter of all
sports throughout the year
rather than focusing solely
on football.
"I'm a black-and-white
guy," he said. "I don't lie. I'll
always be honest with you."
That honesty has been ap-
arent in Electra, where he
called a meeting
of athletes in grades seven
through 12 after speaking to

position last week so they
could hear the news that he
interviewed for the job from
him and nobody else.
Young said his coaching
style has been referred to
by other coaches as "Old
school," and that he expects
the kids to work at all times.
The coach said he hates
leaving Electra, but that
problems with dwindling
numbers caused him to be-
gin looking for other op-
portunities. When he heard
that Farmer had suddenly
left Olney ISD after a single,
0-10 season, he recalled the
top-notch weight room, gym
and other facilities at Olney.
The fact that Olney ISD, a
Division 1 school, has higher
numbers of students to work
with only sweetened the
deal.
The Haskell native ran
track and played football at
Abilene Christian University
post-graduation Right out of
college he worked as an as-
fhat
sistant in Hawley.
"We won two gan
year," he said. "The seniors
had never won before."
After Hawley, Young
moved on to Ore City and
Baird. He then worked as
an assistant coach at Denton
Guyer for six years before go-
ing to Electra in 2012.
"Most of the schools I've
been at haven't been great
football schools or athletic
schools," he said. "I like to
work through things, and
when you have numbers it
helps."
Another of Young's trade-
marks is hard work, which
became apparent as he
helped take Denton Guyer's
from a 1-19 record over its
first two years to state playoff
contenders and champions.
"You've got to out-work ev-
eryone," he said. "With any
type of change there's posi-
tive and negatives. I'm going
to treat these kids like they're
