STILL MAKING GOVERNORS
The big newspaper correspondents
are still very busy making governors
and if the state gets all of the gover-
nors these wise boys elect she will
be by all odds the best governored
state in the world In the Sunday
papers are where most of these fierce
political contests occur and it is a
source of unending pleasure to read
of the ever changing situations In
the Houston Post of yesterday Staff
Correspondent Fitzgerald writing
from Dallas said there were really
only two men in the race namely Col
quitt and Johnson Colquitt is the big
plum In South Texas while Johnson
has North Texas clinging to his bosom
like a long lost daughter Staff Cor-
respondent McNealus of the same
paper writing in the next column
says Colquitt and Poindexter are the
boys with the support and the Fort
Worth Record says this is the situa-
tion in a nutshell The Waco Times
Herald says Davidson has the inside
of the track and is running necks
ahead of the bunch but the Waco
paper is fair enough to go into some
detail as to Johnsons record and
shows how he came to the front in
the famous Waco convention and
saved Hogg from being wiped out by
the opposition The mixup is com
plete and the truth is there is not a
man in Texas today who knows a
thing in the world about how the cam
paign is going to line out One thing
Is attracting attention however and
that is the drawing power of John
sons campaign Everywhere he

Tes the split log drag is all right
but it takes some one to work it An
other thing If these drags cost a few
hundred dollars and were turned out
by some concern that could spread
on a little red paint and do a lot or
advertising every town and county in
Texas would be buying them Pales

Dont get discouraged Keep on
hammering and one of these days
you will get results that will please
you Denison Herald
The two Heralds have written the
truth The Sun has hammered con
stantly for several years in an effort
to bring the split log drag into use in
this county It has cited instances
close by in which the work of the
drag was a standing monument to it
and has told of how cheap and simple
was its construction It has been
published in these columns that ten
thousand farmers were using drags to
good effect in Missouri and that that
state and Iowa and Illinois and other
states had officially adopted it as a
producer of good dirt roads At times
there was fun poked at the paper
and at no time was there anything
doing for the drag Recently how-
ever a good friend telephoned that
Mr Ben Guynes of Chatfield was giv-
ing a demonstration of the split log
drag and It was bringing such excel-
lent results that everybody would
likely adopt the drag and put it to
use Since then there have come
constant reports of what Mr Guynes
has done and is doing with the drag
and all declare that his four or more
miles of road is as pretty and as
smooth as one would wish and that
it is a delight to drive over it Yes
the split log drag is all right Dont
get discouraged Keep on hammering
and some of these days you will get
results that will please you Corsi

All things considered Palestine Is
one of the most fortunate towns in
the world so far as fires are con-

the old town had a sure enough big

The Anderson County Boys Corn
Club is now a real thing and every-
man and woman in the county should
get behind the movement and encour-
age the boys to get results Such a
movement is of inestimable value to
the county and In the education of the
boy along practical lines
Tlio East Texas Commercial Con-
gress proposed for Nacogdoches in
April at the time or the meeting of
the East Texas Press Association is
a very valuable movement and every
commercial body In the section should
send a delegation to such a congress
that a cooperated movement be
started to advertise the merits of
East Texas to the world East Texas
needs boosting until people are at
tracted this way and after that it
will be no trouble to get the lands
settled up
The Beaumont Chamber of Com

campaign at this time in the promo-

immense crop of rice has been grown
in the rice belt of Texas but for some
reason the demand Is not as heavy as
it should be for the product and the

SAN ANTONIO REPUBLICANS MAD
Do Not Like Interference of Texas
Republican Bosses
Herald Special
San Antonio Texas Feb 21
There is redhot rebellionamong the
republicans in this city All because
United States Marshal Eugene Nolte
and United States District Attorney
C A Boynton not to mention Cecil
Lyon republican boss of the state
butted into and prevented somehow
the conferences that had been sched-
uled by the executive committees of
the various district organizations In
a resolution adopted Mr Nolte is ac-
cused of intentions to defeat any ef-
fort to place republ hMl ididates
in the field in TwITlleijJrOTTOlilstrictsT
and to have had a hand in olher and
equally pernicious pieces of interfer-
ences It is quite possible that were
Nolte and Boynton resident politicians
the wrath would not be as great but
being nonresidential federal office-
holders and political bosses this is a
different matter Mr Lyon also has
come in for a great deal of adverse
criticism due mainly to the fact that
during his control of the Washington
pie counter as far as Texas is con-
cerned he is said to have indulged in
what may be termed political nepo-
tism There are some old republicans
here who fain would have a slice of
the federal appointments that come to
Texas but who so far have been dis-
appointed instead of appointed In
view of the fact that San Antonio is
one of the main strongholds of the re-
publican party in Texas a great deal
of political fence patching may be
looked for by those who have been
called down

case stranger than was ever pictured
in fiction is that of Wm I Browne of

About twelve years ago the man

time is alleged to have been a heavy
drinker and it is thought that the ef-

hearing of his case it developed that
his wife was a willing party to his
transfer to the institution and that
