Gaines County’s unemployment
rate at 3.2 percent in November
Gaines County’s unemployment
rate rose slightly in November,
according .to the monthly report from
the Texas Workforce Commission.
Commission figures showed a total
labor force of 6,846 in the county,
with 6,625 employed and 221
unemployed, a rate of 3.2 percent.
In October , the county work force
totaled 6,749, with 6,539 employed
and 210 unemployed, a rate of 3.1
percent
The seasonally-adjusted
unemployment rate in Texas dropped
one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.2
percent in November.
According to Diane Rath, chair of
the Workforce Commission,
“Sustained job growth, along with
the lowest November unemployment
rate in 27 years, represents continued
health of the economy and abundant
opportunities for Texas workers.”
Seasonally-adjusted
nonagricultural jobs grew by an
estimated 27,300 during November,
the nondurable goods manufacturing
industry added 1,900 jobs in
November and the retail trade
industry gained 6,700 jobs last
month.
Among area counties, Andrews had
a 4.9 percent rate in November,
compared to 5.2 percent in October;
Dawson had a 4.3 percent rate,
compared to 4.1 percent in October;
Terry County had a 3.8 percent rate,
compared to 4.0 percent in October;
and Yoakum County had a 5.1
percent rate, the same as in October.
The lowest unemployment rate
among Metropolitan Statistical Areas
(MSAs) was again the Bryan-College
Station area with 1.4 percent,
followed by Austin-San Marcos with
1.9 percent, Lubbock with 2.2
percent, Dallas at 2.9 percent and
Fort Worth-Arlington and San
Angelo with 3 percent each.
McAllen-Edinburg-Mission had
the highest unemployment rate with
14 percent, followed by BrownsviUe-

AUST1N--Pesticide applicators
have more options than ever to earn
the continuing education units
(CEUs) necessary to renew their
license. Agriculture Commissioner

over the Internet. Applicators can
check out the site (www.tipmf.org) or

private groups offer traditional
classroom courses. Applicators can
also obtain some credits at home
through self-study options.
Applicators can obtain a list of
approved courses or other
information on CEU courses by

pesticidc/ccuhomc him).
All private applicators may earn
the required credits by passing a
comprehensive recertification exam.
This test costs $50 for each attempt.
After passing, an applicator will
receive a certificate of completion for
15 CEUs.
Applicators will receive a
certificate of completion at the end of
each course. They should hold onto
these for a year after they have
renewed their license. The certificate
contains the course number and CEU
hours completed. The applicator
transfers this information to the
renewal form he or she receives in the
mail.
