the largest and most representative
crowds ever seen in Milwaukee as-
sembled today to join in the welcome
to exPresident Roosevelt who ar-
rived here from St Paul shortly be-
fore 8 oclock this morning Despite
the early hour an immense throng had
gathered at the station and the greet-
ing to the expresident was In keeping
with the enthusiastic demonstrations
which have everywhere attended his
tour throughout this section of the
country
After concluding breakfast at his
hotel the expresident was taken in
tow by the local reception committee
and the remainder of the forenoon
was spent in an automobile ride
about the city with brief visits to
the Soldiers Home Marquette Uni-
versity the Chamber of Commerce
and other institutions and points of
interest At luncheon the distinguish-
ed visitor and his party were guests
of the editors of the Milwaukee dally
newspapers and of the entertainment
committee
The afternoon program provided for
a public reception at the hotel and
later a visit to the Milwaukee Press
Club Twelve thousand tickets of ad
mission have been issued for the Au-
ditorium tonight where the expresi
dent is to conclude his stay in Mil
waukee with a public address

Roosevelt will make a seven hours
visit to Chicago tomorrow and every
minute of the time will be turned to
account He is scheduled to arrive
here at 5 oclock in the afternoon and
will remain in the city until midnight
The chief feature of the program will
be the banquet at the Congress Hotel
at which he will be the guest of honor
and chief speaker The affair will be
under the auspices of the Hamilton
Club the leading republican organiza-
tion of Chicago

dent of the Southern Railway who
was heard on the subject of The In-
terest of the Railways of the South in
Conservation
Other speakers heard during the
day included Senator Newlands of Ne-

ler of the Austrian nobility five years
ago and thereby caused an Interna-
tional sensation today became the
bride of Alexander B Marvin a for-
mer well known New Yorker who
now spends the most of his time in
Porto Rico looking after his extensive
coffee plantations there
The bride is the daughter of the
late Mr and Mrs Frank W Jones

Twombly she is related to the Vander
bilts Since the death of her mother
in Norway four years ago she has re-
sided with her sister in Cambridge
where todays wedding took place
It was six years ago while travel-
ing in Europe with her mother that
Miss Jones then an impressionable
girl not quite out of her teens was
fascinated at Carlsbad by the dashing
Captain Arthur Kamler Baron von
Saarberg The captain proved an ar-
dent wooer and within a few months
after their first meeting the engage
ment of the couple was announced
Soon the wedding invitations were is
sued and all arrangements for the
marriage completed The young girl
and her mother returned home and
shortly afterward Captain Kamler ar-
rived to claim his bride The latter
however found that in American sur-
roundings she no longer loved the
titled foreigner With rare courage
the girl broke the engagement almost
at the altar steps

lightning this afternoon while stand-
ing under a tree two and a half miles
out of Kirbyville Justice A B Mc-
Mahon of this city held the inquest
and identified the man by papers on
his person The remains were
brought to Kirbyville

New York Sept 7 The assembling
of representatives of the Interstate
Commerce Commission the railroads
and the shippers organizations in this
city today to begin the taking of evi-
dence in regard to the proposed in-
crease in freight rates in the east
marks the real beginning of the great-
est railroad fight In the history of
America The hearings will be con
ducted along the same lines as those
recently held in Chicago where the
officials of the western roads were
called upon to justify their advances
in rates The hearings before the
commission in this city will probably
consume several weeks The chief ar
guments on the side of the railroads
will be presented it is expected by
counsel representing the big systems
such as the Pennsylvania Erie New
York Central and Baltimore and Ohio
The testimony will be heard before
Judge G N Brown chief examiner of
the Interstate Commerce Commission
Farmer Found Dead
Corpus Christ Texas Sept 5 M
B Wilhite a farmer who lived a few
miles southwest of this city was
found dead near his home late yester-
day evening When viewed last night
by Justice Whelan and Deputy Sheriff
Regis the body was lying in a pool
of blood and a pistol lying nearby
The coroner has not yet rendered a
verdict Just before the shot was fired
Mr Wilhites sons had gone to the
field to collect fodder There were no
eyewitnesses to the shooting De-
ceased was a widower He leaves five
children four sons and a daughter
Car Struck a Mexican
El Paso Texas Sept 5 Soon after
crossing the Stanton street bridge into
Mexico last night the Juarezbound
car struck a Mexican knocking him
unconscious Knowing that it meant
imprisonment for them Conductor
Grimmette and Motorman Nail jump-
ed from the car and raced for the line
pursued by ruraies and won The
car line was tied up for several hours
The injured Mexican Sisto Alvarado
was bi ought to a hospital on this side
where he died tonight

cans would vote for him For many
years he has been an intimate per-
sonal friend of President Taft

Baldwin enjoys an international repu
tation From 1893 to 1906 he was as-
sociate justice of the supreme court oi
Connecticut and from 1906 until his
voluntary retirement last spring he
was chief justice He is a professor
