NORTH DAKOTA ARE REPORT-
ED DEAD AND ELEVEN OTHERS

Norfolk Va Sept 8 The explo-
sion of a barrel of oil and a fire that
followed on the battleship North Da-
kota this afternoon resulted in the
death of three men and eleven others
are reported missing
The accident occurred just inside
the Virginia capes

port received here this afternoon says
the battleship North Dakota is
aground in the lower Chesapeake Bay
The report says the coal bunkers are
afire and that many sailors have been
overcome in attempting to subdue the
flames
Aid has been asked by wireless of
the Norfolk navy yards
THIRTY THOUSAND MINERS WILL
RETURN TO WORK AS RESULT
OF AGREEMENT REACHED BY

Kansas City Mo Sept 8 Thirty
thousand miners of the southwest dis-
trict will resume work Monday as the
result of an agreement on the arbi-
tration and penalization clause in the
new contract reached at an early hour
this morning in a conference between
President Lewis and the operators
The arbitration clause which barred
strikes provides that the miners shall
remain at work sixty days after a
disagreement with the operators or
following the declaration of intention
to strike In the meantime the dif-
ferences shall be submitted to the
permanent arbitrator The demands
for wage increase better working con-
ditions and mine protection were all
conceded by the operators The south-
western district includes Missouri
Kansas Oklahoma and Arkansas

Second Trial of Chicago Bribery Case
Closed This Afternoon and the
Jury Is Guarded

Chicago 111 Sept 8 The second
trial of Lee ONeil Browne charged
with bribery of legislators in connec-
tion with the election of United
States Senator Loiimer closed today
and the case will bo given to the jury
late this afternoon The closing ar-
gument was made by States Attorney
Wayman The argument was filled
with personalities and the court fre-
quently had to request the defense not
to interrupt with objections In his
closing remarks Wayman said
Browne is guilty as charged this
is why they browbeat me I defy
them to investigate with grand jury
charges that I have influenced wit-
nesses Brownes crime is not a per-
sonal misdemeanor but the greatest
crime against the state and republic
ever tiied in this court Both the
state and defense have detectives to
guard the jury room to prevent any
outside interference

day declared positively that Albert
lulien the suspect being held is not
the man who killed Flagman Wynne
and forced the electrician to rob the
passengers on an observation sleeper
Tuesday night Griffin visited Julien
in his cell He says the robber was
better dressed and that his eyes weio
darker and more piercing and further
