tonight in the gold room of the Con-
gress Hotel where Colonel Theodore
Roosevelti will address a gathering of
republican leaders representing the
entire Middle West It will be a
mixed assemblage inasmuch as it
will include many of the most promi-
nent leaders of both republican fac-
tions That the expresident will say
things that will set the ears of some
learers atingling is regarded as
a toregoBEwmclusion
Colonel Roosevelt is expected to
outline in vigorous language his views
on the political issues now agitating
he republican party and to set forth
in unequivocal terms his position as
between the insurgents and the
standpatters Just what position
the former president ma take is of
course unknown It is believed how-
ever that the speech will be pro-
gressive in its character and will
give aid and comfort in one form or
another to the insurgency How far
the speaker may go in this regard
how much aid and comfort the in

persons who know the former presi-
dent say that he will leave not the
slightest doubt in the minds of any
of his hearers as to just how he
stands on all of the republican partys

eral hundred of the leading republi-
cans of this section of the country

vited as well as Senators LaFollette
and Cummins Among others who

whom have accepted the invitation

New York Sept S The new Penn-
sylvania terminal station in this city
the largest and most magnificent
structure of its kindjn the worldto
gether with the tunnels whicfi con
nect it with New Jersey on the one
side with Long Island on the other
weie opened to public traffic today
The formal dedication of the station
and tunnels took place about one
month ago but actual traffic through
the tubes and in the terminal was
not inaugurated until today The
event which marks the beginning of
a new and important epoch in the
development of New Yorks transpor-
tation facilities was duly celebrated
In Manhattan in Brooklyn in Long
Island City and other Long Island
towns by enthusiastic popular demon
trations today
The work of this

remarkable engineering feat The
tunnels are continuous tubes of steel
nearly seven miles long are lined
with concrete and accommodate each
but a single track
The erection of the terminal sta-
tion itself was a tremendous under-
taking Before the first stone of the
masonry work of the building could
be laid which was on June 15 190S
an enormous amount of work had to
be done About five hundred build-
ings occupying the area bounded by
Seventh and Eighth avenues Thirty
fust and Thiitythird streets had to
be torn down the entire area exca-
vated to a great depth and not until
then could the actual erection of the
magnificent structure be begun
The New York station of the Penn-
sylvania railroad is the largest build-
ing ever constructed at one time in
the history of the world It covers an
area of twentyeight acres of yliich
J eight acres nre taken up bv the ter
Iminal building itself the rest by the
yards The station is a beautiful
structure built after the RomanDoric
style of architecture It is construct-
ed or pink granite quarried at Mil-
ford Mass steel and brick and is di-
vided into three levels The lowest
part contains the tracks which are
fully forty feet under Uhe street level
and are reached by numerous stair-
ways connecting the tracks with the
waiting rooms and corridors etc on
the ground floor
The main entrance is in the center
of the Seventh avenue facade which
extends 430 feet but all four of the
fronts are practically of the same dej

stitute a lasting memorial to his
name was begun about six years ago

Standing room was at a premium
last night at the Alrdome upon the
third nights appearance of the
Curtiss Comedy company here The
spacious capacity of the resort was
taxed to its utmost long before cur
tainrising time on the first act of
Out West and after the perform-
ance had started many were turned
