Old Roman Barge Found v
In Thames River London
In digging the foundations of the new county liali the Loudon county
council on the south bank of the Thames at Westminster lias discovered a
relic of Romail days a long oak barge pressed flat by the weight of Thames
mud above it wAien this barge sailed the Thames the riVer was a pellucid
stream with a clean sandy bottom The barge was cunningly contrived with
a stout keel perhaps lifty feet lung Mde ribs set twelve inches apart and an
Inside beam measurement of sixteen feet to eighteen feet It was clinker
built with two inch flanking boards and neatly rounded dowl plus holding
everything together Not a piece of metal we t to its making It was all
fine oak Its black ribs are bare to the sky sodden with water and son to
the touch The coered portion is still under three feet of compressed Thames
mud above which again aie the concrete foundations of the old Crosse
lilackwell warehouse So lottcn are the black timbers waterlogged for cen-
turies that preservation is almost out of the question In the days when the
boat sank the stieain of the Thames probably took a course 100 yards to tiw
southward of its present Hue

THE insert this advertisement in the
issue of September 21th
It is true that this advertisement is at
variance with the persistent statement of
reudymade clothing manufacturers that
their product is equal to custom made
Its substantiation is found however in
tlie fact that W P Willis Co confine the
distribution of their highgrade imported t
fabrics exclusively to custom tailors
If you want to be certain that you are
buying a suit which cannot be duplicated
in any line of readymade clothing you
will be interested in the Willis fabrics
which we have to submit this season
Every piece of Willis imported cloth is
