JUDGE GILL FOR MAYOR
The current issue of the Houston
Labor Journal contains the following
leading editorial
Among the prominent citizens of
Houston mentioned in connection
with the mayoralty is Judge W H
Gill senior member of the law firm
ofc Hogg Gill Jones A lawyer at
high rank and clean character he
stands at the head of his profession
Not alone in law is he recognized
but his keen foresight and business
sagacity is acknowledged by all who
keep aSreast of the times For years
a close student of municipal prob
lems he would bring a trained judi-
cial mind along with the experience
of a successful lawyer and business-
man
Judge Gill presided oyer the court
of civil appeals at Galveston for
years as chief justice resigning that
high station to enter the practice of
Jaw in this city He has proven an
exception to the rule that is to say
after years of judicial service a man
cannot reclaim his position and stand-
ing in the business world The most
successful period of Judge Gills ca-
reer has been since he reentered pri-
vate life and practive
Governor Campbell upon assuming

the feins of government cast about
for really big and business men to
place upon the penitentiary board
Judge Gill was chosen a member
and made its chairman The accom-
plishments of this board wherein
success after success has been
achieved in the management of her
convict farms and tens of thousands
ofdollars placed to the states credit
that theretofore had been iven over
to individuals is a state secret And
in this connection ia can be said that
Judge Gill was instrumental in bring-
ing about better conditions on the
farms and in the mines where con-
victs are worked He made a per-
sonal inspection which wrought great
and much needed changes and con
victs now receive proper considera-
tion and humane treatment
His intimate knowledge of the law
the powers and limitations of govern-
ment eminently qualify him for the
office of mayor of a great city In
conjunction with his ripe experience
as a man of affairs this knowledge of
the law makes his candidacy most
desirable at this time when great
business and legal problems confront
tlie municipal government
Those who are intimately acquaint-
ed with Judge Gill and familiar with
his views on questions of municipal
government know him to be progres war to sorae of the doubtful states
he in All movements In New York the potvlias boiled over I
every sense
for the growth and advancement of
ihe city would receive his unqualified
indorsement and active support
His career on the bench has been
without reproach His record as a
lawyer is without a blemish The
success that has followed him in his
chosen profession has been most pro-
nounced His integrity is unassail-
able His standing as a business man
a man of affairs and a good citizen is
recognized by eye ry one who has
come in close business contact with
him during the years he has mai
Houston his home and the field of his
activities
The Labor Journal believes that
Judge Gill is eminently qualified to
preside over the destinies pf this city

SUNFLOWER PHILOSOPHY
Every man quits his had habits
least once a week
Every poor man wonders why
every rich man doesnt own an auto-
mobile
A man who refuses to arbitrate a
controversy is unusually in the
wrong
The first cold snap in the fall
brings out some pretty tough looking
overcoats
Can you look into the future and
see a whole lot of things that are not
so
A man doesnt know to what extent
anger can go unless he has paid a
security debt
A woman who wants to bo an in
valid is very apt to be
Every man feels like a hero when
he turns in a fire alarm
The model husband you read about
in books is the henpecked man in
real life Atchison Globe
STEAK AND ONIONS
at
Texas comes tolerably near supply-
ing this country with its steak and
onions Anyway Texas onion growers
succeeded in cutting iihportations for
the year ending June 30 to 1021000
pounds Increased acreage and stor
age facilities will later on eliminate
imports which remind us when every
Texas barnyard is prosperous and
every farmer man has a small bunch
of fat cattle sheep and hogs for mar
ket therell be little or no worry
about the steak supply from Texas
Fort Worth StarTelegram
Judge W H Gill formerly of this
city and still regarded as a Palestine
man by his hosts of friends here is
being favorably mentioned as the next
mayor of Houston The judge would
nfake the South Texas city a good
mayor hut the Herald doubts very
seriously if he could be persuaded to
accept the place The judge resigned
a place on the higher court bench to-
go into private practice and it is
doubfful if he would go back into pub-
lic life of this character
With the election only a little more
Cardinal Vannutelli Pleased
With America Reports to Pope
Cardinal Vannutelli who visited the United States for several weeks fol-
lowing the euchnilbtic congiess at Montreal will have a long report to make
to the pope wlieu lie reaches Rome and as a result the coming consistory of
the sacred college may decide to name one or more American cardinals as
has been frequently hiutud at in the news dispatches Caidinal Vannutelli is
of commanding appearance standing several inches higher than the average
man The pictures showthe cardinal with Archbishop Farley of New York
during the consecration of St Patricks cathedral in the metiopulis Eiery

talnment and according to the statements he made lie is piost favorably Iw
pressed with this nation and its people
several times and both the democrats
and lepublicans are claiming the vic-
tory In Grandoldtexas everything is
cut and dried and the only excuse the
republicans have for maintaining an
organization is to furnish the title of
colonel to a few of the leaders and to
