It’s a dirty job but someone
has to do it.
Following Monday's Gaines
County Courthouse fire that dam-
aged the county attorney’s offices
and filtered smoke throughout the
three-story building, a professional
cleaning and restoration firm is on
the job.
"It's been very professional.
I'm very impressed," said Gaines
County Judge Judy House.
From 40 to 45 Blackmon
Mdoring and BMS Catastrophic
employees are on the job each
day to tackle the task that will take
about one week to complete, said
Joel Mowery, a Blackmon Mooring
general manager from Lubbock.
Crews began the process
on Wednesday. They will work
throughout the weekend, Mowery
said, and wrap-up mid-week.
BMS Catastrophic is a divi-
sion of Blackmon Mooring. The
company has provided clean-up
services after incidents such as the
Oklahoma City bombing and the
Pentagon Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist
attack, he said.
The courthouse fire, which
occurred shortly before 6:55 p.m.
on Monday when a bystander
noticed flames and called for help,
originated in an electrical outlet in
the county attorney's secretary's
office. That off'ce sustained fire,
smoke and water damage.
County Attorney Sterling
Harmon's office, which is adjacent
to the secretary's office, sustained
smoke and heat damage.
The fire left both spaces sooty

Filing Period Ends Monday
for Local Level Elections
By Dustin Wright
Sentinel Managing Editor
With one day left in the filing
process for several local entities, it
appears that Seminole residents
will be deciding on one local race
in the May 13 general election.
Three at-large seats are up
for grabs on the Seminole Inde-
pendent School District Board
of Trustees, as four people have
thrown their nam.es into the ring
for those seats.
Incumbent board members
Kevin Chiles and Dr. David Wright
have filed the proper paperwork
with the superintendent's office
to seek re-election to their seats,
while challengers Guy Chaney
and Becky Klaus have also en-
tered into the race.
"I would like to have the abil-
ity to influence future generations
and help improve the education
of our children for future genera-
tions," said Klaus.
Klaus, 25, is the mother
of three children and has been
married for eight years to her hus-
band, Danny.
The couple has made their
home in Seminole for the past

Seminole Post Office Seeking to Continue Service
P. Christine Mills
Seminole Sentinel
Obtaining passports in Semi-
nole is impossible now since the
Gaines County District Clerk's
Office discontinued the service on
Feb. 22, but the Seminole post-
master is working to take on the
responsibility.
However, Postmaster Tommy
White is unsure how long the pro-
cess to become a passport accep-.
tance facility will take. The U.S.
Department of State, which issues
passports and authorizes new fa-
cility sites, has put a freeze on the
opening of any new locations, he
said on Friday.
"We asked back in Septembei
to go do that," White said. "We're
going to do photos as well. We'l
be able to do the whole package
here."
While the U.S. Department
of State application process is
supposed to take about 60 days
White and the U.S. postal district
in Fort Worth had heard nothing
about the pending federal approva
until learning of the freeze on Fri
day morning, he said.
"It's prettv easy on my part,’
White said ot the application pro
cess. "Our district staff handles al
that."

Election Set
Gaines County Treasurer's
Seat Up for Grabs on April 11
By Dustin Wright
Sentinel Managing Editor
In less than a month, Gaines County voters will head back to
the polls once again to determine who will hold the Gaines County
Treasurei’., seat for the next four years,.
April 11 has been the date set for the runoff election for the
treasurer’s seat, which will feature Democratic incumbent Lesha Aterl
and challenger Vincenta Munguia, neither of which was abie to gain a
majority vote in the March primaries, held Tuesday.
In Tuesday's Democratic primary election, Aten received 587
votes out of 1,452 cast, amounting to 40.43 percent of the vote, while
Munguia received 525 votes, or 36.16 percent.
To win the primary election, either candidate had to receive 51
percent of the votes cast in the race.
Primary challenger Judy Mutschler received 340 total votes in the
race, amounting to 23.42 percent of the votes cast.
According to Gaines County Clerk Vicki Phillips, early voting for
the April 11 runoff election will begin on April 3 and run through April
7.
As it was in the March primary early voting process, the Gaines
County Clerk's office and Seagraves City Hall will serve as the official
sites for the April 11 runoff election.
Those sites will be open to eligible voters from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
