Rep. Delwin Jones
guest speaker •
for Lions Club
State Representative Delwin Jones
of Lubbock was the guest speaker for
the Ladies Day luncheon meeting of
Seminole Lions Club Tuesday at
Thelma's.-
Rep. Jones, who chaired the House
Committee to draft the new
rcdistricting plan, gave a good
explanation of how the plan was
finally devised.
“Rural Texas was hurt by the
redistricting plan and gave yet more
power to the metropolitan areas of
the State,” he said. The House plan
gave approximately 139,500
residents to each of the 150 districts
with< only 9 incumbents paired
against each other. The Senate failed
to act on a plan or to approve the
House plan. Thus, it was turned over
to the Legislative Rcdistricting
Board. That plan which paired 34
incumbents, was rejected by the
Justice Department. After 14 law
suits were Tiled the courts eventually
ordered the House plan to go back to
district court. Finally, the proposal
when to the federal level where three
federal judges devised the final plan.
The plan resulted in the loss of two
rural representatives and paired
Republican incumbents Jones and
Gary Walker in this year’s election
for the 83rd District. The local district
was reduced from 10 to five counties,
including Gaines, Yoakum, Cochran,
Hockley and part of Lubbock.
Rep. Jones indicated his continued
support for House Speaker Pete
Laney, his new district, and the
interest of rural counties of Texas.
During the business meeting
Chairman Tommy Phillips gave final
assignments for the annual Lions
Pancake Supper to be held Tuesday
from 4-7 in the Elementary Cafeteria.
