Two Female Swimmers
Fall Short Regional Finals
Two Seminole Maiden swimmers advanced to the finals of the
Region I-AAAA Swimming and Diving Meet, but just missed short of
advancing to state competition following action held this past weekend
at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center in Lubbock.
"Our kids did well," said Seminole AquaTribe swimming coach
Tim Sage.
Sophomore Kyra Briscoe finished in second place overall in the
Girls 100 Breaststroke, with a time of 1:14.88, but needed a time of just
over 1:13 to advance to the University Interscholastic League’s State
Swimming and Diving Meet, slated to be held in Austin in a few short
weeks.
Alison Mohr of Andrews defeated Briscoe in the event with a time
of 1:14.33, earning the Region I-AAAA title in the event and an auto-
matic bid to Austin.
"The way that state qualifying works out, is that the first place
winners from each region automatically advance," said SISD Athletic
Director Chris Burtch. "After that, they take the four best times from all
four regions to fill the rest of the State Championship heat."
Briscoe swam a 1:17.10 in preliminaries held Friday at the Ragus
Aquatic Center.
"I am very proud of her," said Sage. "She shaved three seconds
alone from her preliminary time in the finals. "
Briscoe also finished in fourth in the Girls 200 Individual Medley,
with a time of 2:27.81 That event was won by Lindsey Shaw of Pecos,
who finished with a time of 2:22.76.
Seminole’s other regional finalist, senior Amy Banman, finished in
eighth place in the Girls 200 Freestyle, with a time of 2:25.88.
That event was won by Amanda Nevarez of El Paso Chapin, who
finished with a time of 2:07.11.

Sentinel Managing Editor
Seminole Indian head basket-
ball coach Paul Page stated that
he was a little worried about some
of the distractions that proceeded
the start of the Indians final District
3-AAA contest Tuesday night
against rival Lamesa.
"1 was worned that with
parent's night and the basketball
court celebration, our kids might
have been a little distracted, but in
fact they weren’t," said Page.
Seminole (21-10, 11-1) used
a 15-4 run with 5:55 left in the fi-
nal period to help secure a 56-40
win over the Golden Tors, who
were mathematically eliminated
from playoff contention Tuesday
night with the loss.
The Seminole win, along with
a 65-43 win by Midland Green-
wood Tuesday night over Fort
Stockton, ensures the Indians a
share of the District 3-AAA title,
and a late week showdown with
the Rangers for the first place
seeding and a bye in the Class
3A, Region I Bi-District round of
the playoffs.
That contest is slated to be
held Thursday, Friday or Saturday
evening at a neutral site that had
not been determined as of press-
time Tuesday night
Senior Micah Clay led the
way with a quiet 16 points on the
night, 14 of which came in the
second half of play.
Fellow seniors Lance Sheets
and Riley Davis followed suit with
double-digit scoring on the night,
as they both chipped in 12 points
apiece

on an early charge, scoring nine of
their 13 fourth quarter points in
the final period before the fateful
5:55 rpark
From that point m the contest,
Davis and Clay led the Charge,
scoring five and six points respec-
tively in the final minutes to help
secure the Indians’ second straight
playoff appearance under Page.
Early on, we couldn't con-
vert offensively, so we had to rely
on our defense to keep us in the
contest," said Page of the Indians'
slow start
"They gave us a zone de-
fensive look early in the contest
and at times we had trouble with
it, especially early in the fourth
quarter, but we were able to keep
our composure and battle our way
out of it."
The first points of the contest
came wit 5:05 left in the first pe-
riod, as Indian senior Eric Stewart
broke the ice with an easy lay-up
on the left side of the basket.
From that point, the Indians
went on to outscore the Tors 12-3
in the quarter, with Lamesa s first
field goal of the game coming with
just 21 seconds left in the quarter.
In the second, Lamesa pulled
to within 10 points by the halftime
break, as guard Brady Free sqored
six of the Golden Tors 12 points
in the quarter to cut the Seminole
lead down to 25-15 at the half.
After a fast start in the third.
the Indians once again saw the
Golden Tors begin to slip back
into the ballgame as post Joel En-
riquez and wing Braxton Maxwell
led another 12 point charge to cut
the Seminole lead down to 39-27
heading into the fourth.
Lamesa’s Free, Maxwell
and Enriquez all finished with 10
points apiece to lead the Golden
Tors in their final contest of the
season.
The Golden Tors saw their
season end with a 16-14 overall
record and a 6-6 showing in Dis-
trict 3-AAA play.
