MIRACLE OF THE ORIENT
By Roy A.. Cloudt
No better word in man’s vocabulary can
explain the New Life Evangelistic Crusade
recently conducted in the islands of the Or-
ient than the word Miracle. The American
College Dictionary presents this definition
for the word miracle: “An effect in the
physical world which surpasses all known
human or natural powers and is therefore
ascribed to a supernatural agency.” What
our eyes viewed, what our ears heard, and
what our hearts felt throughout the entire
tour of Asia could easily be described as
supernatural.
Because of the kindness of the hearts of
Of the good people of the Howe community it
was possible for me to preach to the Philip-
pine Islands for two weeks and to witness
for one week in Hong Kong besides viewing
our Southern Baptist mission work in Guam
Tiwan, Japan and Honolulu. In latter issues
of this fine paper I will have the opportunity
of sharing other experiences in the Orient,
but in this one I wanted to present only the
activities for one brief day of the pearly five
weeks crusade.
One night we had the privilege of travel-
ing by jeepney many miles from the mission-
aries home (Rev. Billy Tisdale) in theTarlac
Province of the Philippine Islands to Lalapae
Victoria, where the Gospel had never been
preached. It was a barrio (village) with
about two or three thousand population. Not
even one Bible could be located in the entire
village. After bumping along for some time
over rough roads, rice paddies and through
various barrios, we came to Lalapae. We
stopped in front of a nipa hut and through
the darkness were ushered up to the front
of the barrio lieutenant’s home by the in-
terpreter, to secure permission to preach in
his village. When we finally arrived at the
preaching point, only a very few people
EDITORIAL
We are thankful to Rev. Cloudt for the
article appearing in the column to the left
andvery glad that he had the opportunity
to make the trip to the Orient and be able
to give us information regarding conditions
there. We will be looking for his article,,
with considerable anticipation next month.
We have asked the pastors of the dif-
ferent churches to write a “sermonette” for
the Enterprise each month. So, each week
we will have one written by a different
minister. Don’t know what the order will
be yet, but expect to have one each week
Jhen in four weeks Rev. Cloudt will be with
us again. We surely will look for it.
Congratulations to

THOMPSON HARDWARE
We came to Howe to be a booster and
not a knocker—we are looking for the good
and not the bad. Of course if something
bad happens and it is an established fact,
We will run it as a news item, but we are not
running around with a spyglass looking for
some misconduct on the part of anyone.
We do want to boost all we can our
churches, clubs, fire department, schools,
ball team, and anything for the benefit of
Howe and its trade territory. In this con-
nection, we want to report all the activities
of these organizations and groups and let
the people know about anything that is to
come up in the future—let us run in our
paper announcements of games, services,
or any doings you want the public to know
about..
One thing we want to impress upon the
people of our community is that, quality
considered, merchandise can be bought right
here in Howe as cheaply as Monkey-Sawbuck
or any other of the big downtown mail-order
or department stores. Illustration Mrs. Sloan
went to a local store tp get an article and
thought the price was high—but when she
examined the garment she found that it was
just the same as those sold in the finest
down-town stores in Fort Worth for—almost
twice the price. Yes, the price may seem a
little high, but when you take into consider
ation the quality, you find the price is cheap
and the quality good.
Then it pays to keep Howe dollars in
Howe. But more about that later.
We do not wish to be in the position of

we do get one.

a good opportunity for a competent pharma-

After a thorough description of God’s
plan of redeption was given, an invitation
was extended. It was here that we saw and
felt the power of God very strongly. The
men began to respond. Since no ladies or
children responded to the invitation, we ail
knew that this service had opened the doors
into approximately four dozen homes aver-

the ORIENT.

Gospel hymns in the Ilacane dialect. When
the people heard the singing, they came by
the hundreds, sat on the ground and listen-
ed to the proclamation of God’s Word. After
a very simple Gospel message describing the
fact that every person was lost and needed
salvation. (Romans 3:23 “For all have sin-
ned and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death
but the gift of God is eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord.”) Then the dark
skinned people of the Philippines were told
that God loved them and that Christ died
for their sins Romans 5:8 sounded good to
their hearts: “But God commendeth his iove
toward us, in that, while we were yet sin-
ners, Christ died for us.” They were also
informed of the fact that the Bible revealed
the way to know how their sins could be
forgiven and their names written in God’s
book. They listened very attentively as the
following verses-were read and explained: '
Isaiah 1:18 “...though your sins be as
scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though
they be red like crimson, they shall be as
Wool.
Acts 2:21: “Whosoever shall call on the
name of the Lord shall be saved.”

all likewise perish.”
