THIS WEEK’S SERMONETTE
THE MENACE OF
MODERATION
By Roy Beans
For the Christian Church
In Ecclesiastes 7:16,17, we have a little
known passage of Scripture: “Be not right-
eous over much, neither make thyself over
wise; why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou
foolish; why shouldest thou die before thy
time?” . : .4|MK
The scholars have differed about the
interpretation of this portion of Scripture,
but it could well be the creed of the “middle
of the road” Christian. “Be moderately
wicked and modeately righteous.” The
greatest peril today is not extremeism, but
modertism. No, I do not mean moderation
for moderation is temperance, which avoids
excess. Moderation, however, is Laodicean
luke-warmness, it’s neither hot nor cold..
Some people argue, “Isn’t it better to bq
luke-warm than cold? Ins’t it better to join
a church and support it even though one is
unsaved than to stay out altogether? Isn’t
it better to go half way than never to start?”
Our Lord said, “No.” There are those today
who bost that they don’t “go off the deep end”
in religion. Some say, “I’m not committing
myself too far.” Now that was the trouble
with the rich young ruler. He was a fine
person but wouldn’t sell out completely. The
rich young ruler was a moderatist. Modera-
tion works on both sides of the street. Mod-
eration sits down at the Lord’s table Sunday
morning and dirinks a cocktail Sunday night.
Moderation slaps God on the back in cheap
famliarity. It makes Christianity a cheap
commodity. Moderation is a product of the
age of conformity,, “peaceful co-existance.”
It is the great general average and the low-
est common denominator. The devil pulls
down the high and builds; he cheapens re-
ligion and makes his own product respect-
abue. He advertises liquor, not with the
Bowery bum, but with the man of distinction.
(It’s the moderate drinker who keeps the
business going. It’s the moderate drinker
who causes the automobile wreck. You throw
the total drunk in the back seat.
The devil advertises tobacco, not with
the lung-cancer victim, but with an attract-
ive girl who has not used it long enough to
show the effects on her person.. He makes
dancing respectable by the sanction of
the church and puts it under religiious aus-
pices with prominent churchmen attending
it. Even the Bible is portrayed today by
pursuers of iniquity. Preachers are criticized
if they take a stand against such things.
Moderation pulls down the high and elevates
the low to respectobility. It smudges black
and white into an indefinable gray. The truth
is today that the halfway Christians crowd
the churches. You see, when the Lord’s
sheep are gray, that makes the black sheep
less conspicuous. Christians in spotted
garments are not so disturbing to sinners as
saints who walk in white.
There isn’t any such thing as 50% loyalty
to Jesus Christ. If a man is 75% loyal to his
wife, he’s not loyal to her at all. Jesus said,
“He that is not with me is against me, and
he that gathereth not with me scattereth
abroad.”

COMMISSIONERS
COURT
PROCEEDINGS
BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
SET
The Commissioners’ Court
passed an order setting the
Board of Equalization for
Grayson County. This is to
begin on May 24th through
the 28th, 1965 and to resume
June 7th through the 10th,
1965. The County Clerk was
authorized to advertise the
setting of the Board of Equ-
alization.
The Court accepted a peti-
tion from people along route
from Cannon to the Collin
County line along right of
way 2729 to make this a farm
to market road. The people
have agreed to donate the
land to the county, the county
would pay them for their
fences at the rate of 17 cents
per foot and a fair market
price for any improvements
that could not be moved.
This would make a direct
connection with Hwy 121 go-
ing into Dallas. We accepted
this and will write the state
to ask them for this extersion.
Poul Lee was authorized to
advertise for bids for thirty
loose leaf binders for the!
County Clerk’s office. Month-
ly vouchers approved.
The County Attorney met
with the Commissioners’
Court and went over the bills
on the agenda to see which
ones will be good for our
community and we can write
to our legislators accordingly
The Court approved a res-
olution for the inundation of
a road at flood level where
no one is living on this road
at this time and it is not an-
ticipated a great deal of use
by the public.
The Commissioners’ Court
opposed House Bill 311 and
is sending letters to the State
Senators and Representatives
stating same.
Contract was signed with
Roy Baker for the collection
of delinquent taxes for the
months of January and Feb-
ruary since this would com-
plete his two lears of collec-
tion. Beginning March 1, the
county attorney’s office as-
sumed responsibility for the
delinquent taxes.
