OF INTEREST TO
FARMERS
TILTING CALF TABLES
“How do you hold the
squirmy little critters?” You
squeeze ’em in a chute and
strap ’em down.
Plans for two tilting calf
tables to help livestock men
restrain calves for dehorning,
branding, vaccinating, cas-
trating and blood tests have
recently developed by the U.
S. Deprtment of Agriculture’s
Farm Building Plan Exchange
Plan No. 5962 is built of
wood and is desined for per
manent installation. It uses
a neck yoke and squeeze gate
to restrain the animal. Also
available are plans for a stur-
dy but portable version (plan
No. 5969) of pipe that uses a
squeeze gate and leg holders
to hold the calf snugly and
without injury against the
fixed side.
Both versions tilt to place
the calf parallel to the ground
in an ideal position for work-
ing on any part of the body.
The permanent table is shown
installed as a “Y” on a chute
so it can be used or bypassed
easily.
Working drawings of plans
5962 and 5969 may be ob-
tained free from your Coufity
Extension Office at the County
Courthouse in Sherman.

Agent, Sherman, Texas.
CONTOUR FARMING
Countour farming can be
easily phacticed by farming
row crops with terraces, ac
cording to R. C. Thomas, SCS
Technichian at Van Alstyne.
Contour farming (1) helps
hold soff in place, (2) provides
for more even distribution of
moisture, (3) helps terraces
do a better job by feeding
water into terraces at a slow-
er rate, (4) helps smoth gul-
lys and other uneven areas
in the field, (5) increases ef-
ficient use of equipment be-
cause the equipment oper
ates on the level, (6) elimin-
ates dead furrows up and
down the slope when prepar-
ing a seedbed; this greatly
reduces chanel washing in
the field.
