Pro-Life March

was God saying. 'Yes, this is the direction
I want you to take."’ The support of Gar-
cia's wife affirmed his decision to proceed
with the walk.
Garcia and Moses next approached Bishop
Grad da for his approval. Again, Garcia
offered the decision to God and was pre-
pared to accept whatever answer would
come. Upon the consent of the bishop,
Garcia said he felt this idea was “defi-
nitely from God."
BishopGracidu will h: leading the final
four miles of the march from Christ the
King Church here to Corpus Christi Cathe-
dral w here Benediction will take place.
During the interview last week Moses
interjected that "this is die way Our Lady
of Guadalupe would have wanted it. If you
remember the story' of Our Lady of Guada-
lupe. w hat did she tell Juan Diego to do?
'Go tel! the bishop."’ which. Moses said,
emphasizes the pro-life movement's soli-
darity w ith the bishop. “During that week
(.of the march) we will all be Lay Maryans,
we will all be Guadalupanas and Guada-
lupanos."
When asked if the march is part of the
natural progression of the events of the
pro-life movement which have occurred
here during the past year, Mosesdisagrced.
“This is not a progression, but a stopping
point, an opportunity to give thanks for
what has already been done. Our Lady of
Guadalupe is the patroness of this diocese,
patroness of the unborn. She is our patron-
ess in the pro-life movement. Ami al-
though all these things arc happening-the
Gabriel Project, rescues, sidewalk coun-
seling. everything that’s going on--this is a
good time to stop and thank her for all of
her prayers on our behalf and to thank
Jesus for moving in the way that He has
moved.
“So we are going to march bom the
western tip of the diocese at San Agustin
Church at the border to the eastern tip of
the diocese, the Cathedral on the bay.
We’re going to celebrate her goodness."
According to Garcia and Moses, they
will be accompanied on the march by
others devoted to the pro-life movement,
including clergy from the dioccsc in a
spirit of prayer and thanksgiving. A ban-
ner of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
and a processional crucifi? veil! be can ted
by the marchers for the duration of the
walk.
The faithful of the dioccsc will be able
to participate by meeting with the march-
ers along their way. The trek will begin ai
San Agustin Church in Laredo on Satur-
day, Oct.6, at 9 a.m.
Episcopal Vicar forthc Western Vicari-
ate Msgr. James Tamayo and organizers in
Laredo arc planning a procession from the
starting point continuing a mile and a half
to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Garcia
said this will give those living in the. Laredo
area--who will not be able to w'aik in the
march with the btshop--a chance to walk
together as a community in solidarity with
the Corpus Christi march.
"All of the people will come into Our
Lady of Guadalupe Church and say a
prayer,’’ continued Garcia. “Then the
w«alkcrs will stand up and receive a bless-
ing and come out of the church in proces-
sion with our Blessed Motherand continue
walking out of Laredo. The people in the

born.” It w'ill also be an opportunity for

p.m.
Garcia emphasized that their stop in
Alice will be special because fourth and
fifth grade students from St. Elizabeth
School will meet the marchers at the out-
skirts of the city and walk with them for
two miles.
Father James Harris, pastor of Our Lady
of Guada'upe Parish in Alice, said he is
“inspired by the dedication of the people
in the pro-life movement. The Church
needs to support them. This march isn’t a
political statement but a pilgrimage.” Father
Harris will be demonstrating his support
by accompanying the group of pilgrims on
Lhe entire journey and leading them in
prayer. Garcia said he has received en-
couragement and support from other pas-
tors who may walk parLof the way with the
group.
The highlight of the march will be the
events occurring Oct. 13, beginning with
the praying of the Worldwide Rosary for
Life at Christ the King Church at 9 a.m.
and followed by the four-mile procession
to the Cathedral with Bishop Gracida.
At the Cathedral the bishop will address
the people and bless them during the
Benediction. Then the Knights of Colum-
bus will serve a light lunch atSs. Cyril and
Methodius Church.
