Putting cable back toether proved to be a long and tough job for
telephone crews Monday and Tuesday this week. A major cable
and a smaller one were cut early Monday morning, causing
service to 494 telephones to be discontinued. Piecing lines back
together is Jim Rush of Three Cs construction. Overseeing the job
is Bruce Potter, South Texas Division manager for Century
Telephone Enterprises. Full details are in a story on page one.

For telephone collection
Man needs
storage space
A man who is planning to someday
have the second most complete
telephone museum in the United
States is looking for storage space for
his already large collection.
John Clabom is presently storing
his some 300 telephones in two boats
in Ingleside and one in Port Aransas.
When his collection is ready for show
in Port Aransas, it will be the most
complete working telephone muse-
um, with the exception of the
Smithsonian Institute, he said.
Claborn, a Mustang Telephone
Company employee, retired after 30
years with General Telephone Com-
pany. Upon retirement, the' company
gave him old phones to repair.
“When you retire, you’re consi-
dered old,” Claborn said. “So they
said they would keep an old man
happy.”
“What I need is someplace to keep
them all,” Claborn said. He is
looking for a 20 x 80, two-story
building to house his collection.
Claborn said his collection has all
three types of telephones; dial,
magneto and common battery. Each,
he said, represents an era of
telephone technology.
"Everybody (phone collectors) has
a bunch of them, but none of them
have all three systems working,”
Clabom said. He plans to set up his
museum whereby visitors can use the
phones to talk to others visiting
within the museum.
A magneto phone is a crank-style
telephone. The dial phone is the type
phone in use today.
Common battery phones are
phones predating dial phones. While
it was in use, the caller would be
connected to the operator, who would
then make the connection with the
desired party.
“Within 20 minutes, you'll be able
to talk on 150 years of telephones,"
Claborp. said.,Manyi<of hM tpfmhMk
collected through trading vntn
other collectors.
Because he has collected and is
now storing his telephones on a low
budget, he said it is necessary to
find a place to store the phones
which wouid not cost money.
“I hate to bum, but now Tm over
the barrel," Clabom said. “I just
need some place where I can keep
them all."
When completed, Clabom’s muse-
um will be free and open to the
public. The proposed location for the
museum is 2720 S. 11th.
"Next fall, there’s going to be an
antique show," he said. "We really
will have quite a show down here."
Anyone interested in donating
storage space should contact John
Clabom, 749-6111.
