Change For The Better
The Archer County News - Thursday, October 9, 2008 - Page Three
This Fall, the North Texas Re-
hab Center will present the sec-
ond annual "Change For The
Better" program in Archer City
Elementry School.
The program has 2 or 3 thera-
pists and trainers going out into
the schools and speaking to stu-
dents about healthy nutrition,
better eating habits and exercise
that will help them "Change For
The Better." It will include a
demonstration on how much
sugar is in the foods they eat,
planning a healthy meal and an
interactive exercise session.
Following the presentation,
the school will then spend the
next two weeks collecting
change to be donated back to the
Rehab Center to help change
client's lives for the better by pro-
viding sponsored services to
those who otherwise couldn't af-
ford care.
The program is sponsored by
Union Square Federal Credit
Union, which will host the
change collection at their down-
town Wichita Falls branch on
Friday, Octoberl7.

STAY CALM
When you're in a state of panic,
you can do some things really
well, such as run after a bus,
think up an excuse or find a last-
minute gift. Other tasks,
however, require a calmer
approach. You don't want to be
panicky when you're slicing a
tomato, pouring hot coffee or
preparing your taxes-and you
certainly don't want to panic
when you're investing for the
long term.
Yet, in the midst of the $700
billion Emergency Economic
Stabilization Act, the failure of
some well-known banks and
investment firms and the
precipitous drop of stock prices,
some investors are panicking.
For them, the investment world
has turned upside down.
But as an individual investor,
your world hasn't really changed.
You still have some long-term
goals, such as a comfortable
retirement. You still need to
invest to achieve those goals.
And you still need to follow an
investment strategy that's
appropriate for your individual
objectives, risk tolerance and
time horizon.
However, with so much
negative news, you might be
tempted to make hasty, short-
term - even panicky - decisions.
Don't. Instead, follow these
suggestions:
Be patient. There's no denying
that the markets are now
extremely volatile. At the same
time, if you avoid making sudden
moves, such as putting all your
money into "cash" instruments,
your patience may well be
rewarded. After all, we still have
an enormously powerful and
resilient economy.
variety of events - wars,
assassinations, terrorist attacks,
natural disasters, corporate
scandals and so on - only to
regain its footing and move on
to new highs. And since the
biggest gains can occur in the
early stages of a market
turnaround, you could miss out
on the possibility for
considerable growth if you're
sitting on the investment
sidelines.
Look for opportunities. If
you never planned on buying
any stocks again, you'd probably
have good reason to be upset
when you see the Dow Jones
Industrial Average falling
hundreds of points a day, which
has happened several times
recently. But if you are still
investing for your future, you
will be purchasing stocks, and
that being the case, the market
decline actually gives you some
great opportunities to buy at
lower levels. You may not be
Warren Buffet, who invested $5
billion in investment firm
Goldman Sachs, but you can
follow his long-held philosophy
of buying quality stocks and
holding them for the long term,
through good markets and bad.
It's worked pretty well for him,
and it may be a good idea for
you, too.
One final tip: Don’t go it
alone. During these tumultuous
times, you can benefit from the
assistance of an experienced
financial advisor - someone who
who knows your investment
preferences, risk tolerance,
family situation and long-term
objectives.
These aren't the easiest times

Charley Webb is a beautiful
single mother who writes a
successful and controversial
column for the Palm Beach Post.
She's spent years building an
emotional wall against scathing
critics, snooty neighbors, and
her disapproving family. But
when she receives a letter from
Jill Rohmer, a young woman
serving time on death row for
the murders of three small
children, her boundaries slowly
begin to fade. Jill wants Charley
to write her biography so that
she can share the many hidden
truths about the case that failed
to surface during her trial. Seeing
this as a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity, Charley begins her
journey into the mind of this
deeply troubled woman.
Her path takes a twisted turn,
however, when the anonymous
letters she's recently received
from an angry reader evolves
into threats, targeting her son
and daughter. As Charley races
against time to save her family,
she begins to understand the
value of her seemingly intrusive
neighbors, friends, and relatives.
As she discovers this network of
flawed but loving people might
just be her only hope of getting
out alive.

Quilters have flocked to Elm
'74-4543
Creek Manor to learn from
Master Quilter Sylvia Compson
and her expert colleagues.
There's Sarah, Sylvia's one-time
apprentice who's paired her
quilting accomplishments with
a mind for running the business
of Elm Creek Quilts; Agnes, who
has a gift for applique; Gwen,
who stitches innovative art
quilts; Diane, a whiz at the
technicalities of quick-piecing;
and Bonnie, with her
encyclopedic knowledge of folk
art patterns. But with Judy and
Summer, two other founding
members of the Elm Creek
Quilters, departing to pursue
other opportunities, will the new
teachers be able to fill in the
gaps created by the loss of their
expertise-and more important,
their friendship?
"When I think of all the
different paths I could have
followed in my life, all the twists
and turns that could have led me
anywhere," muses incoming
teacher Gretchen, "it's
something of a miracle that I
ended up here, surrounded by
loving friends."
But what of friends departed?
As Sylvia contemplates a tribute
to the partnership of the Elm
Creek Quilters, she is reminded
of a traditional quilt pattern
whose curved pieces symbolize
a journey. Winding Ways, a
mosaic of overlapping circles
and intertwining curves, would
capture the spirit of their
friendship at the moment of its
transformation.
Will Sylvia's choice inspire
the founding members to
remember that each is a unique
part of a magnificent whole?
Will the newcomers find ways
to contribute, and to earn their
place?
Check out the newest
installment to the Elm Creek
Quilters series, The Winding
Ways Quilt by Jennifer
Chiaverini at the Archer
Public Library.
