The record rainfalls in the first five
months of 1990 in Archer County
have given way to searing summer
heat. The only rainfall recorded in
Archer City in June fell on the 1st
and 2nd for a total of 2.78 inches.
Since that time, the temperatures
have hovered mainly in the mid to
upper 90’s. The high for the month
was recorded June 25 when the mer-
cury hit 105 degrees. Since then daily
highs have been 100 or better or just
a couple of degrees below the century
mark.
The extremely high temperatures
are beginning to strain local water
systems as residents try to keep their
vegetation alive. Monday night the
Archer City pumps to the water tow-
ers were running until near midnight.
By dawn, the towers were almost dry
due to the night-time watering being
practiced by residents.
City Manager L.B. Boren, Jr. urged
residents Tuesday to practice volun-
tary water conservation as much as
possible. "We need to keep the water
towers as full as possible at all times
in order to be prepared to extinguish
fires," stated Boren.
