by Priscilla Gibson, ACHS Band
Director
Twenty-two Wildcat Band
members and 32 J-Cat Band
members traveled to Wichita
Falls High School on Saturday,
February 23,2008, to compete in
the UIL Solo and Ensemble con-
test. The Wildcat Band members
earned a total of 9 medals.

tone saxophone; Lauren Skelton,
snare drum; Taylor Fitzsimmons,

and Ensemble Contest held in
San Marcos at Texas State Uni-
versity. The contest will be held
in May. These two performed
solos from the most difficult level
by memory and received supe-
rior ratings at the region contest
to earn their trip to state.
Several more Wildcat Band
members performed and earned
2nd Division (Excellent) ratings
on solos: Cori Hash, Caleb
Hubbard, Randy Rowe, Jerry Bob
Goodwin, Tiffany Cornett, and

ings and earned medals for en-
semble performances: Rachel
Ashton, Bailey Hargis, Taylor
Goodwin, Cheyenne Newman,
Erica Avila, Mikayla Gulley,
Allison King, Natalie Knobloch,
Anna DellaNebbia, Marianne
These students begin work on
their contest music usually in
early January and spend 5-
7weeks perfecting their perfor-
mances. They perform their solo
or ensemble for a judge. The
judging is based on how cor-
rectly and musically the selec-
tion is performed and a rating of
1 (Superior) to 5 (poor) is given
based on this. Students may par-
ticipate in two events.
All of the Wildcat and J-Cat
band members did an outstand-
ing job representing our school
and community and themselves.
We are very proud of all the
accomplishments they have at-
tained this year so far. Congratu-
lations!

by David A. Levy, Mayor of
Archer City
The City Council has been busy
over the past two weeks. I'd like
to discuss our new curfew ordi-
nance and let you know the re-
sults of new bidding for our wa-
ter tower renovation project.
CURFEW ORDINANCE
Under Texas law, curfew ordi-
nances must be reauthorized ev-
ery three years. The City Coun-
cil took up the topic at our last
meeting and decided there was a
need to maintain the existing or-
dinance.
In essence, the curfew ordi-
nance prohibits persons under
17 from remaining on public
places (including public streets
and parks) between the hours of
midnight and 6:00 a.m., unless
he or she is with a parent or
guardian, on a school or church-
related activity, or is on the way
to or from work. Parents can be
held responsible for children who
violate the ordinance, as can op-
erators of businesses who allow
children to remain on their pre-
mises in violation of the
ordinance. There are other ex-
ceptions to the restrictions, such
as when children are sent on

golfers compete
On March 24 the ACHS golf
team travelled to Weatherford
and competed in the Birdville
Invitational Tournament at
Crown Valley Golf Course.
They were the only school
competing below Class 4A. The
team finished in 5th place over-
all, and Trey Oswald finished in
a tie for 5th overall with a score
of 80. The other top scores for
the team were Sam Smith with
83, Ethan Snow with 84, and
Blake Thomason with 89. Also
competing was Dillon Bivins and
Ty Campbell. The team total was
336.
The team will travel to Muen-
ster on Monday March 31 for
their* next tournament.
errands for the parents or when
they are out of doors due to an
emergency.
The intent behind the ordinance
is the exercise of common
sense. Kids don't need to be on
the streets after midnight unless
they have a legitimate reason,
and parents should know where
their kids are. The ordinance will
come into force ten days after
publication in this issue of the
Archer County News, after which
time we will enforce it.
WATER TOWER RENOVA-
TION
You may recall that in an ear-
lier message I told you about a
previous round of bids for paint-
ing the water towers (as required
by the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality) that was
approximately $200,000 above
the engineer's estimate. We re-
jected the bid and placed the
project open for new bids. I'm
pleased to report that the new
bids were substantially less ex-
pensive and we will be able to
have the project completed as
originally anticipated. This is the
project for which we received a
$175,000 grant from the Office
of Rural Community Affairs. We
anticipate that the project will
get underway in April.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I was impressed by the level of
enthusiasm shown at last week's
town hall meeting at the Royal
Theater on the Main Street de-
velopment project. It was well-
attended and the presentation by
Decatur Main Street Program
Director Frieda Haley Davis gave
a sense of what is possible when
determination is matched with
effective coordination. Decatur's
Main Street Program website is
well worth a look, http://
www.decaturmaiastreet.com Special
thanks should go out to City
Councilman Bill Miller for orga-
nizing the town hall meeting.
