Archer City's fame is spreading.
Thanks to Mrs. Oliver Landrum of
Dundee, we received a clipping from
the Farewell Tribune entitled "The
Last Dump Show". It reads as fol-
lows:
"Two of the most widely known
small towns in Texas are Archer City
in Hardscrabble Country and LaGrange
(Mike Lobpries' hometown) in Central
Texas.
Archer City is noted for the filming
of "The Last Picture Show" from
Larry McMurtry's novel and LaGrange
for Larry King's Broadway musical.
Both towns have been worked so
thoroughly by the national press that a
Texas reporter wonders what he can
find to write about. But the media has
overlooked the Archer City Dump.
The transformation of the dump be-
gan when city employee Raymond
Harrelson was given the job of clean-
ing up the site. Harrelson had to clear
paths through the grounds and expand
the capacity by excavating the landfill
with the front-end loader.
Some obstacles included huge bould-
ders which Harrelson decided to stack
at a dozen points along the dump yard
road. This could
)e called the Stone-
henge of Hardscrabbleland.
But the eerie stacks of the tall bould-
ers were not enough to satisfy his ar-
tistic ability. He painted a cross on
one and below that wrote 'Jesus
Saves'. Although this may have vio-
lated the constitutional separation of
church and state, Harrelson was not in-
tending to provoke controversy when
he painted the rock. 'It's just what the
Lord laid on my mind to do,' he said.
His wife, Angie Lee, soon got into
the act when she noticed that one of
the boulders resembled the outline of
the map of Texas. She painted the
state's outline on the rock and at the
location of Archer City in the outline,
she painted a huge yellow rose.
The muralization of the dump has
continued and now the boulders have
been painted with a roadrunner, a wind-
mill, an oak tree in front of a snow
covered peak, a rose that resembles a
yellow cotton boll, and a statue of ET.
Let the world take note, Archer City
has acquired a claim to fame. Not
only is it the hometown of the state's

Stage of growth of wheat in the Roll-
ing Plains varies from just emerging
from the soil through the complete
tiller development stage. This means
that producers will need to base graz-
ing pull off dates on a "field by field"
basis. If the crop is to be harvested for
grain, cattle should be removed by the
first joint stage of growth at the very
latest. Some data even suggests that
pull off date should be two weeks
ahead of joint stage. The normal last
of February or first of March pull off
date for the Rolling Plains could be
very wrong in 1988. Check each field
carefully, then act and plan according
to the stage of development.
Topdressing with nitrogen is a sec-
ond factor to be considered at this
time. Topdress should also be com-
pleted before the joint stage. Applica-
tions made after the joint stage result
in little or no yield response.
He

If the crop has been grazed, 40-50
pounds of nitrogen is needed for each
ton of forage produced or removed.
The old rule of thumb of "two pounds
of nitrogen is required per bushel of
wheat produced" refers to total nitrogen
needs and if forage has been removed
by grazing, the nitrogen in that forage
must be replaced by topdressing if a
normal yield is to be realized.
Source of nitrogen is also often a big
question at this time of the year. Base
the decision concerning source of nitro-
gen on price per pound of actual nitro-
gen, ease of application, dealer equip-
ment and service. A pound of nitrogen
is a pound of nitrogen, regardless of
the source. One other consideration of
source might be the option to combine
fertilizer applications with other pesti-
cides or weed controls, if the timing
and method of applicaiton is consistent
with recommended practices.
