THE RATTLER
March 19, 1948
Dean of St. Mary’s Law school, Ernest A. Raba, stepped back against the wall to relinquish the
spotlight to the Hon. J. E. Hickman, chief justice of the Texas supreme court, the main speaker at
the Victory Banquet celebrating the Law school’s affiliation with the American Bar Association.
Full-Time Veteran Students Get
Automatic Subsistence Increase
Under a law recently enacted
by the Congress of the United
States, many veterans pursuing a
full-time course in schools, col-
leges and universities will be eligi-
ble for an increase in their subsist-
ence allowance.
The new rates of subsistence will
be $75 per month for veterans
having no dependents; $105 per
month for veterans with one de-
pendent, and $120 per month for
veterans with more than one de-
pendent.
This change will go into effect
April 1, 1948, and will be auto-
matic. Veterans need not make ap-
plication for the increase.
The only action required of the
individual veteran is the submis-
sion of proof of dependency. This
proof may be in the form of cer-
tified copies of the court record
of marriage, divorce, or birth.
In the case of veterans actually
in training April 1, 1948, payment
of the increased amount of subsist-
ence will be made retroactive to
April 1, 1948, if the necessary
proof of dependency is received in

the Veterans administration prior
to July 1, 1948. For those enter-
ing training after April 1, 1948,
the higher rates of subsistence will
be paid as of the date that com-
plete proof of dependency is re-
ceived in the Veterans administra-
tion.
The VA wishes to advise all
veterans engaged in part-time jobs
while attending school under Part
VIII (the GI Bill) that this new
law does not change the levels
previously set for combined sub-
sistence and wages. The maximum
amount of combined subsistence
and wages that may be received by
a veteran with no dependents is
still $175 per month, and for the
veteran with one or more depend-
ents it is still $200 per month.
The increases in subsistence pro-
vided for in this new law do not
apply to veterans taking on-the-
job training, institutional-on-the-
farm training, combination or co-
operative training programs requir-
ing less than the normal full-time
instruction, part-time institutional
training, internship and residency
training, or graduate training pur-
sued under a fellowship requiring
a reduced credit-course load be-
cause of services rendered under
the provisions of the fellowship.
For detailed information and as-
sistance, see Mr. Norman Rodney,
Jr., contact representative from
the San Antonio Regional office
of the Veterans administration,
who may be reached in the VA
office opposite the school business
office each Tuesday morning,
