Sam Houston senior 1996 Queenof Soul
S. J. Davis holds annual Career Day
"Yes I Can” was the theme of S. J.
Davis Middle School's annual Ca-
reer Day last Friday, March 29.
Students were encouraged by pre-
senters from a variety of occupa-
tions. More than 50 speakers jour-
neyed with hallways and classrooms
of Davis Middle School, emphasiz-
ing to students the importance of
continuing their education to reach
their greatest potential.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was
co-sponsor of the event. The Na-
tional Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa,
Inc. Gamma Tau Chapter was also
affiliated with the event.
Counselor Joyce Williams was Ca-
reer Day coordinator. Lloyd Bagwell
is principal.
Gates Elementary School vice-prin-
cipal Anita O'Neal, talking to Davis
6th graders about the importance of
an education and setting goals.
An 18-year old Sam Houston High
School senior has been cbosen the
1996 Queen of Soul. Chloe Scott,
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Scott III was crowned Queen of Soul
last week at the Carver Community
Cultural Center.
She received a $1,000 scholarship to
the college of her choice.
The Queen of Soul and her court will
make appearance in Fiesta parades
and other community activities
throughout the year.
First unner-up was Rashame Jeffer-
son, a senior at Roosevelt High School
and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Stanley Jefferson.

Choreographer Aaron Callies,
whose work has included choreo-
graphing for Fiesta Texas and who
has worked with Walt Disney Pro-
ductions and Sea World of Texas,
will choreograph the San Antonio
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority's 1996DeltaQueen of Hearts
Coronation and Shades of Ebony.
Callies' choreography talents were
also used in a 1992 Bob Hope special
for NBC TV.
The affair will be held at the Carver
Community Cultural Center, 226 N:
Hackberry Street, Sunday, April 14,
at 5 p. m. Admission is $15 adults,
and $7.50 for students, 6-21.
According to Shirley Bell, public-
ity chairperson for the sorority,
"Shades of Ebony” is a musical blow
torch of sound from the early days of
Harlem and is set in the time frame of
the 1930’s.
The production features six profes-
sional singers and four trained danc-
ers with the songs of Eubie Blake,
Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, and
other Black composers.
"Your heart will sing, dance, and
cry out when this family style Las
Vegas Showcase explodes on stage.
Let the truth be heard! There is not
one ray of blackness, but (here are
'many shades of Ebony,” Bell said.

scholarships
Five outstanding high school seniors
will be awarded $1,000scholarships
by the San Antonio Air Logistics
Center and the Kelly Black Heritage
Association this Saturday, April 6, at
the 1996 Youth Scholarship Gala
which will be held at the Kelly AFB
Officers' Club
Slate Rep. Karyne Jones Conley will
be the guest speaker.

National Political
Congress for Black
Women S A chapter
may re-open
Local businesswoman Dessie
Robinson is trying to re-open the San
Antonio chapter of the National Po-
litical Congress of Black Women.
There was a chapter here in the early
80's, however, it became inactive.
The organization was formed in
1984 by former Congresswoman
Shirley Chisholm. A non-profit or-
ganization, the NPCBW has as (me of
its goals, to empower Black women
in the political and economic arena

Town Hall meeting
' Citizens of District 2 are being in-
vited by Councilwoman Ruth Jones
McClendo to participate in the
quarterly Town Hall meeting for
District 2.
The meeting will be held May 6
from 7-9 p. m. at theDellcrest Church
of Christ, 1550 S.W.W. White Road.
Representatives of various city de-
